To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Yisrael Zusman (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Iyar*.

You ask when there was a change in the customs of prayer. I received the customs presented in the pamphlets of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that have been published (see note 2), unless it is specified that it is a personal view — and in most cases, I state the reason.

Regarding the customs you cite — the conclusion of the berachah* (see note 3) "He chooses His people Israel with love" — I received them directly, though discreetly, from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. The same applies to lowering the head while reciting the Kaddish*, and to touching the beginning and end of the Torah* passage when one is called up for its reading.

This is not the case, however, with the reading of the expression "the remembrance (zeicher*) of Amalek*" with a tzeirei* or a segol* (see note 4). This is my personal view, based on what is printed in the Boneh Yerushalayim*. My references are specified in my notes on the Reshimos* of Megillas Esther*, which you should consult.

You ask me how this was practiced in Lubavitch. My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, told me that there, in the shul*, customs without foundation were observed. Despite this, the Rebbe Rashab* did not intervene.

No doubt you will inform me, with appropriate detail, about what is happening at the Kfar*. May Hashem grant that you fashion large vessels to receive the blessings of Hashem, an inheritance without limit. And may there be, above all, a closeness of hearts and peace, as the Mishnah* requires.

With my blessing and greetings to all the chassidim* — may they be granted long life,

M. Schneerson
