Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 3 Sivan, in which you tell me that your daughter — may she be granted long life — has been engaged for a long time. But for now, you cannot envision celebrating her marriage, for lack of the necessary means to acquire an apartment.

You know the saying that one gives advice only to one who requests it. Despite this, I take this opportunity to reiterate my most vehement protest against the custom that prevails in the Holy Land (see note 1), according to which a marriage causes considerable expenses. The apartment must be in such a location, such other conditions must be fulfilled. The result is a particularly prolonged interruption (see note 2).

To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to explain how undesirable such an interruption is, particularly in our generation, an orphaned generation. You must understand what I mean. Moreover, such a practice is unfortunately widespread among the young men of the yeshivos*, who should nonetheless serve as models and examples of conduct based on our holy Torah*.

As you know, one must grant everyone mitigating circumstances, especially when it involves a custom that has unfortunately been adopted by many families. Nevertheless, those who are on the spot — particularly the roshei yeshivah*, those who exercise their influence among the students — must raise a protest and do everything in their power to change this custom, minhag*, an anagram of... (see note 3). And of course, you yourself must act accordingly regarding your own family.

I have good hope that, in accordance with your letter, you have a fixed study of Chassidus* and you continue to extend a warm welcome to those who were trained at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. As you know, our Sages say that one counsels eagerness only to those who naturally possess this quality.

With my blessing to report good news of all this,

P.S.: I am enclosing a check for your personal expenses.

As you request, I will mention those you cite in your letter near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that they obtain the satisfaction of their needs.
