Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter from erev* Shabbos*, in addition to the news conveyed to me by telephone. It is regarding this that our Sages deliver a well-known teaching: "If we had the merit... but we do not have it." I mean that if you were occupied with strengthening Yiddishkeit* and propagating it in your city — fulfilling, as a student (see note 1) of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, your role of disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus* until they reach the outermost places — you would surely write to me and report what is connected with merit, and not what causes distress. However, you do not have this merit. Consequently, you telephone and write to me about such matters.
May Hashem grant that this hint from Divine Providence suffice for you, that your son — may he be granted long life — recover very quickly, for in the future you will invest yourself in all that has been said above. In this way, you will frequently announce good news to me — of your positive actions, their fruits, and your plans to expand them — even though you have not written to me about any of this for a long time, because your activity has weakened.
Indeed, nothing can withstand teshuvah*, and as our Sages state, cited in chapter 9 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*: "If one used to study one page, one should study two" (see note 2). You must understand what I mean.
On the occasion of the approaching festival of Shavuos*, may we merit, together with all of Israel, in accordance with the formulation of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and in an inward manner. You will bring your son — who will have long life — into the covenant of our father Avraham* (see note 3) at a good and auspicious time.
With my blessing on the occasion of the festival,
P.S.: You mention his name (see note 4). You know that this must receive the agreement of both parents. The child will have long days and good years.
Notes
(1) A former student.
(2) Teshuvah* leads one to double one's efforts compared to what one accomplished previously.
(3) The covenant of circumcision (bris milah*).
(4) The name to be given to the newborn.
