Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Iyar*. You write that one must adopt an intransigent attitude toward the students when this is necessary (see note 1). Now, it is said that "a judge can only base himself on what he sees with his own eyes" (see note 2). You must therefore determine for yourself whether it is preferable to use kindness or severity.

Thus, even if one can envisage that it be as you say (see note 3), one must nevertheless, for various reasons, adopt a benevolent attitude and be lenient, even within severity. Moreover, our Sages* note that "there are three categories of people (see note 4) whom one pushes away with the left hand (see note 5) and draws close with the right hand (see note 6)." And indeed, one knows the risk associated with "striking one's son when he is grown."

Added to this are the rumors that, it seems, emanate from the older students. These do not strengthen the good reputation (see note 7). You must understand what I mean.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו אייר, הנה כיון שאין לו לדיין אלא מה שעיניו רואות, אפשר שמה שכותב בהנוגע להנהגה חריפה עם התלמידים זקוקים לזה ב..., אבל בכל זה הרי יש לדון בזה עצמו אם במדת החסד או במדת הגבורה, ולכן אפילו במקום שמוכרחים להנ"ל הרי מכמה טעמים יש להקל ולרחם בדין ובפרט ע"פ מאמר רז"ל שלשה תהא ימין מקרבת ושמאל דוחה, וביחוד שיש חשש גם להענין דהמכה בנו גדול וכו' נוסף על השמועות (שכנראה מקורם מתלמידים הקשישים הנ"ל) שאינם מוסיפים בשם הטוב וכו' וד"ל...
