Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Iyar*, and I read with pleasure that several of the doubts you had have disappeared. Our holy books explain that Safek (doubt) has the same numerical value as Amalek (see note 1) — that is, the force of evil that characterizes it (see note 2). Concretely, Amalek is the one who does not hesitate to jump into a pool filled with boiling water, provided that this initiative removes the enthusiasm of the children of Israel, as it is said: "He cooled you off" (see note 3). You will consult the Midrash Tanchuma* at this reference.

You will be able to deduce from this that the same applies to all the doubts you mention, which emanate from the same source. You must understand what I mean.

You say you have read, in astronomy books, that a ray of light emanating from the stars must travel much more than six millennia before reaching the earth. You ask me how to reconcile this assertion with that of our holy Torah*, according to which we are in the year 5716 since creation (see note 4).

Even if one accepts that this calculation of the distance of the stars is correct — despite the controversies that persist on this matter among astronomers — this in no way calls into question the date of creation. Indeed, just as the stars were created, the rays of light were also created. Now, Hashem* can bring a star into being that shines only from the moment of its creation, but He can also ensure that it is created together with the ray of light emanating from it.

Moreover, the first Parshah* of our Torah* says: "And it was morning, one day," while the command "Let there be luminaries" was pronounced only on the fourth day. It follows that light already existed while the luminaries were not yet in their place in the heavens.

You say you have read, in such-and-such a book, that the six days of creation were perhaps not of twenty-four hours. Unfortunately, such explanations appear in other books as well. Nevertheless, they distort the verses. Moreover, you will excuse me for saying that their authors did not sufficiently know the fundamental rules upon which the researchers of various disciplines, wishing to establish the age of the earth, based their assumptions.

The knowledge and examination of these rules prove, according to the most elementary logic, that these are assumptions (see note 5), far from any certainty. Moreover, such is also the opinion of these scientists themselves, as they state in their own books, even if the doubts raised by these rules are not mentioned in the textbooks intended for beginners.

It is unnecessary to say more, or even to cite the most obvious proof that the six days of creation were indeed of twenty-four hours — namely, the impact this has on the observance of Shabbos*, which follows these six days.

You surely know of the three daily studies incumbent upon everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These concern the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, and are well known. You will therefore observe them, at least in the future. In addition, you will establish a fixed study of Chassidus*.

With my blessing,
