Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Iyar*, and in accordance with your request, I will mention the name of your eldest son, may Hashem* grant him long life, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, for him to have better health. As you know, our Sages* emphasize that the wine of Kiddush* and Havdalah* strengthens the clarity of the eyes.

You make reference to your thoughts (see note 1). Our holy books say that "his thought returns with the book" (see note 2). When one studies from a text, the letters shine and they cause the bad thoughts to disappear. Even if one does not have a book available, one should engrave in one's mind the words of the Torah*, in general, and of its inner teaching in particular — "the Tree of Life, in which there is no challenge" — as it is said: "I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth," according to the Raya Mehemna*, Parshas Naso*, cited and explained by the Alter Rebbe* in Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26.

All of this dispels the darkness and the thoughts it inspires. As you know, one thinks constantly, whereas this is not the case for speech, since one can remain silent. It is therefore specifically with a holy thought that one repels an undesirable thought.

On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos*, which is approaching, and in accordance with the teaching of our Sages* that one must adopt the formulation of one's teacher — my father-in-law, the Rebbe* — may we merit, within all of Israel, to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner.

P.S.: You mention the books published by Kehot*. It seems to me that I have already written to you about this — that you should contact the administrators in the Holy Land, and first and foremost Rav* Avraham Pariz, 16 Bar Kochba Street, Petach Tikva.

(Notes in the original:

1. The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "No doubt you also wear the Tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam*, which correspond to the Attribute of intellectual discovery. It seems that this is the time to have them checked. You will do so for both the Tefillin* of Rashi* and those of Rabbeinu Tam*."

2. An alternative reading of the verse in Megillas Esther*: "Through this writing, he annuls his thought.")
