To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,

Rav* Yissachar Dov (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from this Friday, with the request for a blessing it contained for your mother, which I read today, the eve of Rosh Chodesh*, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I await good news in this regard.

I thank you for the satisfaction you gave me by writing how the celebration went on the luminous day of Lag BaOmer*, the Hilula* of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai. No doubt you will also make good use of the time of the giving of our Torah*, the days that precede it and follow it, in the fitting manner. In good time, you will also prepare a program for the summer vacation, which is approaching.

You envision that half of Sunday be devoted to secular studies (see note 2). It is clear that this is not desirable. You ask me whether you should be firm on this matter. Needless to say, the essential thing is that the beginning of the day be reserved for sacred studies. If, however, this is out of the question, one must accept — having no other option — that an initial sacred study then take place (see note 3), with the others being scheduled later. In this way, one also fulfills the injunction: "You shall give the first of your dough (see note 4) to Hashem*."

Admittedly, in such a case, the deficiency remains for the morning hours, when the students are more receptive. These will be lost for sacred studies. You should therefore find third parties who can influence such a person so that she agrees to maintain the current organization of studies.

You inform me of the haircut of your son Yosef Yitzchak (see note 5), may Hashem* grant him long life. May you, together with your wife, lead him to the Torah*, to the wedding canopy, and to good deeds.

With my blessing to receive the Torah* with joy and profundity (see note 6),
