28 Iyar* 5716

Brooklyn

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* David Nathan (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Iyar*, with what it contained. I will mention, at an auspicious moment, all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

May Hashem* grant that in good health and with breadth of spirit, you redouble your ardor in your sacred mission, in your surroundings in general, in your synagogue and your house of study in particular. For if a little light dispels much darkness, how much more so does much light. And nothing can resist the will.

On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos*, which is approaching, may we have the merit, within all of Israel, according to the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner.

With my blessing,

You mention that the kindling of fire was distinguished from the other labors to constitute a specific prohibition (see note 2). One can cite, in this regard, the holy Zohar*, volume 2, page 203b, explained in the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, regarding the commandment not to kindle fire. Likewise, you will also consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 495, in the Kuntres Acharon*. This point is discussed in the responsa Avnei Nezer*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 238.

You mention disseminating the words of the Maharal of Prague (see note 3) regarding the spinning of Tzitzis*. No doubt you will clarify that this is the opinion of the Maharal of Prague, but not that of the Shulchan Aruch*, for example.

You reproduce the opinion of the Binyan Ariel according to which Betzalel made only the Holy Ark. The rest (see note 4) was fashioned according to his instructions and his counsel (see note 5). Indeed, "the Light was not created by a Word" (see note 6). Needless to say, this formulation requires explanation, but I do not have this book available.

You will consult, in this regard, the Zohar*, volume 2, page 127b, the Torah* commentary of the Ramban* on the verse Bereishis* 1:3. You will also see the Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer*, chapter 3: "Ten Utterances appeared in Thought... The Holy Ark and the Light are preserved for the World to Come." You will also consult the commentary of the Radal* on this matter.

(Notes in the original:

1. Rav* D. N. Lesser, of Brooklyn. See, regarding him, Letters no. 3578 and 4542.

2. Among the prohibitions of Shabbos*. Rav* Lesser wrote: "I came to visit the Rebbe* Shlita*. During the lifetime of his holy father-in-law, the Rebbe*, I reported to the Rebbe* Shlita* an explanation of why it is specifically the kindling of fire that was distinguished from all other Shabbos* prohibitions. The Rebbe* Shlita* himself gave me a correct explanation, but I do not remember it precisely. It seems to me that it highlighted the fact that it is merely a spark, fine as the point of a needle. This is considered its force and the force of its force. When such a spark takes form, it is of no use. Then, subsequently, it increasingly approaches fire, which constitutes a truly new phenomenon. This is what I remember, but perhaps I have forgotten. I would be very grateful if you would tell me the content of what you meant to say."

3. Cited in the Drishah, chapter 10, paragraph 1. The wool must be spun for the purpose of weaving Tzitzis*, which excludes machine-made threads. See, regarding this, Letter no. 1722.

4. The other vessels of the Sanctuary.

5. But not by him personally.

6. One of the ten Utterances of creation. In fact, Hashem* enveloped Himself in it. Now, the Holy Ark corresponds to this light. It therefore had to be made not only by the word of Betzalel but also by his concrete action.)
