Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 13 Iyar*, in which you ask me how to explain the necessity for a woman to cover her head (see note 1).
I am surprised by this question, especially since we are preparing for the giving of the Torah* (see note 2). Now, we received it precisely by saying: "We will do and then we will understand" (see note 3), as explained in the well-known passage of tractate Shabbos 88a, which relates the question of the Sadducee: Why was the approach adopted not one of comprehension from the outset?
The answer to this question is as follows: "The integrity of the upright guides them," whereas... (see note 4). And you know the clarification given by the Mishnah* in tractate Berachos*, at the beginning of the second chapter: "One first accepts the yoke of the Heavenly Kingdom, and then the yoke of the Mitzvos*." Nevertheless, when Hashem* is pleased with a person's path, that person succeeds in grasping, to some extent, the reasons for the Mitzvos*. Even so, it remains necessary to practice them with submission and not because one intellectually agrees, for no comparison exists between human understanding and the infinite commandments of Hashem*.
It is quite evident that a person who has faith in Hashem* must meditate upon His commandments without seeking to grasp them through his human intellect. Indeed, sound logic, when it reasons correctly, recognizes that a limited being cannot apprehend the infinite. This is a fundamental principle of faith, and all Jews are "believers, children of believers." They accept that He, His Knowledge, and His Will are one and are infinite. Man, on the other hand, is limited in everything that concerns him.
In addition to all of this, one must consider the reward that is clearly stated regarding the covering of the head. You will consult, in this regard, the lengthy explanation given on this matter by the holy Zohar*, volume 3, page 126a. Even if there were, regarding this, a doubt or even the doubt of a doubt — which is far from the case — the effort of covering the hair would still be justified, even for the sake of that uncertainty. Moreover, the words of the Zohar*, which is part of our Torah*, the Torah* of truth, are true, eternal, and immutable, in all times and in all places.
Experience proves that when one cannot influence someone directly, it is good to do so indirectly, through friends or acquaintances. If sustained efforts are made in this direction, one ultimately succeeds, in a pleasant and peaceful manner.
Moreover, in general, when one finds that one cannot influence someone regarding the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, it is very often because one's own practice is lax in certain areas, even if one acts differently for other Mitzvos* (see note 5). One is then penalized by a lack of effectiveness of the words of encouragement one may pronounce.
Indeed, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (see note 6). And every Mitzvah* is linked to all the others, all forming a single whole. Our Sages* allude to this by saying that the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments correspond to the two hundred and forty-eight limbs, and the three hundred and sixty-five prohibitions correspond to the three hundred and sixty-five sinews. All these limbs and sinews form a single organism.
If you strengthen what must be rectified in yourself, it is clear that you will have more success in your attempt to convince your fiancee (see note 7). May Hashem* grant that you give me good news of all of this.
It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked. Regarding the engagement and the marriage, at a good and fruitful time, you will establish a fixed study of the inner teaching of the Torah* — Chassidus*. Each day, after the morning prayer, you will recite Tehillim*, according to their monthly division, in accordance with the directive of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
I send you my blessing to share good news of all of this, and I wish you Mazal Tov*, Mazal Tov*. You will build a Jewish home, an everlasting edifice, based on the Torah* and the Mitzvos*.
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary
(Notes in the original:
1. For a woman — in this case, the fiancee of the addressee of this letter.
2. During the festival of Shavuos*.
3. Through submission.
4. The wickedness of the impious leads them astray from the truth. See the preceding letter.
5. The Mitzvos* observed laxly by a person are not necessarily the same as those he tries to bring to others. Nevertheless, his own weakness prevents him from convincing those he addresses.
6. In the manner in which one acts toward Him.
7. To cover her head.)
