Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter of 21 Iyar*, which followed a long silence, and in which you state some reasons for which you are discouraged from studying the books of Kabbalah*.
I am surprised by this, for when you were here, what was discussed was the study of Chassidus*, which is, needless to say, entirely different. The reasons you cite in your letter therefore have no bearing. In fact, they do not even prevent the study of Kabbalah*, but in any case, they do not pertain to Chassidus*, which has been studied for several generations already. And there is no need to have prior knowledge of the Zohar*, as you write.
It is quite evident that such study does not compromise the integrity of a person. On the contrary, it develops it. I mean that, besides the knowledge it provides, it also instills light and vitality. Gradually, it also enables one to understand the other parts of the Torah* (see note 1).
Nevertheless, as one can ask regarding the entirety of the Torah* (see note 2), how can a limited creature receive it when "it (see note 3) is longer than the sea"? By saying: "We will do and then we will understand" (see note 4), as indicated by the Talmud* in tractate Shabbos 88a, according to which "the integrity of the upright guides them," whereas... (see note 5).
The same applies to every part of our holy Torah*, including, needless to say, the teachings of Chassidus*. It seems to me that we spoke about this as well when you were here.
May Hashem* grant that you soon give me good news of the building of an everlasting edifice (see note 6) and, even before that, of your establishing a fixed study of the inner dimension of the Torah*. In accordance with the saying of the Alter Rebbe* (see note 7), author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, this fixedness will be both in time and in the soul.
In fact, one event will assist the other (see note 8), and you will consult, regarding this, tractate Eruvin 53b, which offers two explanations, linked to one another, concerning a young woman (see note 9). The same applies also to tractate Kiddushin 30b (see note 10).
I send you my blessing, in accordance with the statement of the Mishnah* that "a person must express himself in the terms of his teacher" — in this case, my father-in-law, the Rebbe* — for you to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner. Please also convey to your friends my greetings and my blessing on the occasion of this festival.
