To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,

Rav* Naftali (see note 1) HaKohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 16 Iyar*, in which you detail the teaching you provide to the classes for which you are responsible. No doubt you will make every effort to increase their number, and your friends will do the same. I am alluding to the number of those who participate in each class.

In this domain, the statement of our Sages* applies: "The candle that illuminates one person illuminates a hundred" (see note 2). You will consult the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 1, paragraph 3, regarding the number of participants in a class. If you make an effort in this regard, you will surely meet with success.

There is no need to explain the importance of all of this. Fortunate are those who organize these classes and study before them, as our Sages* explain — particularly in our Holy Land, "toward which the eyes of Hashem* are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year."

This, needless to say, does not exempt one from studying oneself, both the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus* — this is self-evident. Moreover, the study of Chassidus* enlivens everything that concerns a person in general and the influence he exerts on his fellow in particular.

And the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and the Tanya*, is well known — that through the Tzedakah* one gives to another, "one has a mind and a heart a thousand times more refined." In this way, one experiences particular success in one's study (see note 3).

Please convey all of this to your friends who exercise the same functions as you. May Hashem* grant that each of them share good news of the development of his work and the increase of participation (see note 4).

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מט"ז אייר, בו כותב אודות פרטי הלימודים עם הכתות שהשפעתו עליהם, ובודאי משתדל וכן משתדלים חבריו להרבות מספרם, כוונתי מספר המשתתפים בכל כתה וכתה, שבענין זה הוא כל' מרז"ל, נר לאחד נר למאה, ועיין הלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן, פרק א' סעיף ג' בהנוגע למספר המשתתפים בכתה אחת, וכשישתדלו בזה בודאי יצליחו, וגודל הענין אינו נצרך לביאור, ואשרי המשתדלים בארגון כתות אלו הלומדים לפניהם וכדרז"ל, ובפרט בארצנו הק' אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית השנה עד אחרית שנה.

ואף שאין זה פוטר מלימוד בפ"ע, הן בנגלה והן בחסידות, כמובן ופשוט, ובפרט לימוד תורת החסידות המביא חיות בעניני האדם בכלל ובהשפעה על הזולת ביחוד, כבר ידוע פתגם רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע, אשר על ידי הצדקה עם הזולת נעשים מוחו ולבו זכים אלף פעמים ככה, וכשלומד שיעורו מצליח ביותר וביותר.

ומטובו למסור הנ"ל לחבריו העוסקים בעבודה כגון דא, ויה"ר שכאו"א מהם יבשר טוב מהתפתחות המפעל ומהגדלת השתתפותו בו.
