To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav* Yosef (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of 13 Iyar*, with what it contained. I thank you very much for your effort on behalf of an undertaking as important as the Kollel* Chabad*. You know to what extent each of our masters, in his generation, devoted himself to this institution, from the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, through to our generation. One can deduce from this the immense pleasure caused by those who make efforts for it and develop it.
You tell me that, for the moment, you are content with little, due to the difficulties you experience in raising these sums. I wish to interpret this word "content" as meaning that you are not truly satisfied. It is presumably a simple pause in your activity, with the aim of resuming it with even greater vigor afterward. For this pause to be fully useful, peace of mind is necessary. It is in this sense that one may be content. Such a pause is then an integral part of the effort, since it strengthens the action.
If one considers the statement of our Sages* that "the one who receives does more for the giver than the latter does for the former," and if one applies it to the collection of Tzedakah*, during which one receives only in passing (see note 2), while the action itself endures for the giver, the moral satisfaction of the one who collects will be increased by such an idea and by all others along the same lines. His health will be literally enhanced, as it is said: "Good news makes the bone fat." This is indeed the case concretely, and the account of our Sages* on this subject is well known (see note 3).
You tell me that, for the moment, the branch of the Talmud Torah* in this new location (see note 4) is not meeting with success. No doubt you will make every effort to organize a day camp there (see note 5). This will constitute the foundation and be a good and close preparation for the acquisition of students for the next school year. But in my view, you should certainly not, and may Hashem* protect you, think of closing this branch.
I reiterate my blessing regarding what you informed me of some time ago and what you write to me once again in your letter — that is, the sacred acquisition of four Chadarim* that you have achieved. May Hashem* grant that you and your wife, for long days and good years, multiply your accomplishments for the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, with joy and enthusiasm, financially and physically.
I do not know how Lag BaOmer* was at the Talmud Torah* that you direct. This year, the students were free from secular studies on that day (see note 6). This was no doubt the occasion for an important addition. May Hashem* grant that it make its mark also during the days and weeks to come.
With my blessing,
