and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter and I was pleased to learn, through you, that the classes at the synagogue also covered the laws of Shabbos* (see note 2). However, your letter indicates that all of this now belongs to the past and no longer exists.

Yet you know how important it is to study the laws of Shabbos*. The Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, emphasizes this in Iggeres HaKodesh*, and you will consult, in this regard, the Kuntres Acharon*, page 163a.

Needless to say, one must also know the laws pertaining to weekdays (see note 3) — for example, those concerning blessings, Tefillin*, prayer, and the blessings recited when one derives benefit from the goods of this world. In all these areas, the ignorance is frightening. Moreover, few are those who pay attention to such study, for they prefer to devote themselves to Torah* discussion (see note 4). You must understand what I mean.

I have good hope that you will make every effort to rectify all of this. The public merit depends upon it. You will also consult the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, paragraph 9, and the introduction written by his sons, who edited his Shulchan Aruch*.

The festival of Shavuos* is approaching, and may Hashem* grant, according to the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that we receive the Torah* and in a profound manner.

במענה על מכתבו, נעם לי להוודע ממנו, שבהשיעורים בבית הכנסת הי' ג"כ לימוד הלכות שבת, אבל כנראה ממכתבו זהו בעבר ואין שיעור זה קיים עתה; ועוד זאת אף שידוע הכרח הלימוד דהלכות שבת, וכמו שהפליג בזה באגה"ק לרבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע (עיין שם קונטרס אחרון, קסג, ע"א), אבל מובן ג"כ שמוכרחת הידיעה בהלכות דימות החול וכמו הלכות ברכות, הנחת תפילין, תפלה, ברכת הנהנין וכו', אשר העדר הידיעה בהם מבהיל, ולא עוד אלא שמועטים המשימים לב ללימוד זה מפני שלבם חפץ דוקא בפלפולא דאורייתא וכו', וד"ל. ולכן תקותי שישתדל לתקן הדבר, וזכות הרבים תלוי בו, ולהעיר ג"כ מהלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן פ"ב סעיף טי"ת, ובהקדמת בניו בהדפסתם השו"ע שלו.

ולקראת חג השבועות הבע"ל, הנה יה"ר, וכפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, שנזכה לקבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימית.
