Greetings and blessings,

You tell me that you fear the "evil eye" exerted by a certain person. In such a case, if one pays it no attention whatsoever, if one does not think about it at all, it has no effect.

But since you make mention of this situation in your letter (see note 1), you should have your Tefillin* and the Mezuzos* of your home checked. And your wife should adopt the custom of virtuous Jewish women, which consists of setting aside Tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.

P.S.: You tell me that you had a tombstone made with raised letters. This practice is surprising. Indeed, you were told that such a manner of acting can cause forgetfulness (see note 2), and this assertion is in fact based on the words of our Sages* in tractate Horayos 13b, in accordance with the interpretation of the Taamei HaMitzvos* of Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in Parshas* Vayechi*.

Moreover, one must not introduce a difference from the other graves (see note 3). Consequently, you should, in my opinion, ask the craftsman to engrave indented letters, as is the virtuous Jewish custom.

To conclude on a positive note (see note 4), you will give me good news of the intensification of your study of our Torah*, the Torah* of life, and the practice of its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "He shall live by them."

במ"ש שעשו מצבה באותיות בולטות, תמוה הדבר, ובפרט שמה שאמרו לו שקשה לשכחה, יסודו בדברי רז"ל (הוריות יג, ב ועפמשנ"ת בטעמי המצות להרח"ו פ' ויחי). ועוד נוסף בזה שאין צריכים לשנות מרוב המצבות, ולכן לדעתי יש לבקש את האומן שיעשה אותיות שקועות וכמנהג כשר בישראל.

ומסיימים בטוב, שיבשר טוב בהנוגע להוספה בלימוד תורתנו, תורת חיים, וקיום מצותי' וחי הם.
