Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from before Pesach*, the delivery of which was delayed:

A) You ask me whether you should, in the future, continue to study Torah* as you have done until now — that is, remaining at the Yeshivah* until midday and then returning home.

It is clear that one should not act in this manner, especially at your age. You do tell me that you were compelled to do so. But in my view, as soon as this constraint is removed, you must establish yourself in the tent of Torah* (see note 1) for the entire day.

Such an approach has an impact that is not only quantitative but also qualitative. I mean that if you know you must engage in commercial activity each day, you will lack concentration, constancy, and ardor even during study, as one can verify concretely.

Needless to say, if one of the members of your family does not accept, for the moment, that you devote yourself to study for the entire day, you must speak to him once, twice, many times. If you do so in a pleasant and peaceful manner, you will meet with success and you will manage to convince him.

B) You ask me how to rectify the known transgression (see note 2).

First and foremost, one must forget what happened. Indeed, a person thinks constantly (see note 3), and in order to drive away an undesirable thought, one must concentrate on a positive thought — especially one that conveys the clarity of the luminous Torah*, of which a little light dispels much darkness.

One must observe ritual immersion according to the institution of Ezra (see note 4), recite Tehillim* after the morning prayer, fix a time for the study of the luminary of the Torah* — which is its inner dimension, that is, in our era, Chassidus* — "admitting no challenge from the realm of evil, no dissent from the spirit of impurity" (see note 5). You will consult, regarding this, Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 26.

You will give several coins to Tzedakah* each weekday morning, before the prayer. And you will endeavor to influence your fellow, in particular the young, to draw them closer to the Torah*, its Mitzvos*, and the luminary of the Torah* (see note 6).

Through all of this, you will merit the help of Hashem* and success, for yourself, in everything that concerns the Torah* and the Mitzvos*.

With my blessing to share good news of all of this,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary
