Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the end of the month of Nissan*, in which you give me the reasons and explanations for why you are working in that place and why your place is vacant regarding the activities of Chabad* — or, in any case, not fully occupied.
Even if you were entirely right in what you assert, this does not yet explain what will result from it for the activities of Chabad*. How will you, in this way, be the "keeper of my vineyard" (see note 1)? I have already written to several Chassidim* (see note 2) that our work at the present time essentially follows the principle stated by our Sages* (see note 3), which was commented upon by the Tzemach Tzedek* (see note 4), according to which "we are the workers of the day" — that is, our mission consists of illuminating and enlightening, as is fitting, through the luminary of the Torah*, revealed in Chassidus* and all that pertains to it.
It is therefore not for us to take a seat in another vehicle, and a lengthy analysis explaining why you are there and not here will add nothing. Moreover, it is inconceivable, in my view, that a Chassid* cannot find his place in the domain of Chabad*, given that our holy masters expect this activity from everyone, dispensing no one from it.
You ask me in your letter whether you should abandon what currently provides your livelihood, without knowing beforehand how you will provide for your needs and those of the members of your family. It is quite clear that this was not my intention. Such behavior does not belong to the civilized world (see note 5). But, as I have said — again, to several Chassidim* — we have the merit, in our era, that moral accomplishments elicit a material reward, which is, of course, not the entirety of the recompense but only its interest and the interest of its interest. This point will not be developed here, especially since one can observe in practice that this is indeed the case.
You mention the creation, at Kfar Chabad*, of an accelerated course for teachers. This is a good initiative, as is everything that can be created in that place, on condition that it be possible to base this course on sacred values. Needless to say, someone must take charge of it.
I conclude in the same manner as you began. I will not give specific directives indicating in which area of Chabad* your activity should be exercised, and this for two reasons. On the one hand, I have had the opportunity to observe that Chassidim* apply the principle according to which "one will study what one desires in one's heart," and the same is true in all their activities. It is therefore not useful to give specifics in this regard. Moreover, the details change from time to time, and even frequently, in our Holy Land. But in any case, it is certain that you can assume functions within Chabad*, and if you sincerely wish to, you will be able to accomplish great things.
May Hashem* grant that you become aware of all this as quickly as possible and that it be followed by concrete action.
With my blessing to share good news,
For a certain reason, the sending of this letter was delayed and, in the meantime, I received your letters of 28 Iyar* and 3 Sivan*. Your work toward the immigrants from Morocco, whose spirit is in keeping with that of Chabad*, so that they settle at Kfar Chabad*, is extremely good and entirely positive. Likewise, it is good that their children be integrated into the Talmud Torah* and the Yeshivah* Achei Temimim*.
It is very important to organize for them, frequently, Chassidic gatherings in the Holy Tongue*. Indeed, they complain of perceiving only the superficial aspect of such gatherings, because they do not understand Yiddish*.
Regarding the older ones, particularly those who are married, there is no need to impose upon them the Chabad* rite and its customs. On the other hand, those who will join the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, Achei Temimim*, or the vocational school will thus become accustomed to this rite.
