To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Yehudah Zerachya Mordechai Leib Chaim (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar* and to those that preceded it. I read with pleasure that you were awarded a prize for your Torah* commentaries. May Hashem* grant that you study Torah* "not in order to receive a reward (see note 2)," in accordance with the expression of the Mishnah*. This means that one may indeed receive a prize, but one must remain conscious that the word Pras is of the same etymology as Prusa, meaning cut (see note 3). It is said that "the poor person customarily eats cut bread (see note 4)." And "there is no poverty except of the spirit."

Conversely, one who has the merit to taste the knowledge of the Torah* perceives the value of study and understands that the reward of a Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself — the opportunity to fulfill the Will of the Holy One, blessed be He.

Such an approach has immediate consequences. It enables one to fulfill one's role, to carry out what cannot be entrusted to others, to fully assume one's function as a Rav* and teacher, even if, at times, communal activities may momentarily disrupt Torah* study — from which one is dispensed, in such cases, by the Sages*.

One can understand, from two perspectives, the importance of what cannot be accomplished by anyone else. On the one hand, heavenly concerns — that is, Mitzvos* — are by no means comparable to words of Torah*. On the other hand, if no one else can carry them out, not only are they the equivalent of those words of Torah*, but moreover, they take precedence over them, as explained in tractate Moed Katan 9b. You will also consult the holy Tanya*, chapter 37.

In this regard, concerning the teaching of the class near you, I am very surprised that it has not yet achieved its autonomy (see note 5), as you say in your letter — meaning that it does not benefit from the help of people in your surroundings, beginning with yourself. According to your letter, the resources, the recruitment of students, and all other concerns are entrusted to outside persons, while the others merely assist, which... (see note 6).

As you request, I will mention your name and that of your wife, as well as all those you cite, at an auspicious moment at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that all may obtain the satisfaction of their needs, as you write. You have written to me in the past to inform me of improvements (see note 7). May Hashem* grant that things improve even further.

I send you my blessing to share good news and to know success among your students and in your surroundings, which will increase your success in your personal concerns, in the manner of Hashem*, Who acts "measure for measure" (see note 8), but in vastly increased proportion.

P.S.: You mention, in one of your previous letters, the days of Purim* and what the Torah Or* states regarding Megillas Esther*, in the Chassidic discourse entitled "And Mordechai went out." Indeed, this text establishes a distinction with the moment of the giving of the Torah* (see note 9).

You will consult, regarding this, the Shaarei Orah*, at pages 185 and 192. You will find there an additional explanation regarding all of this.

(Notes in the original:

1. Rav* Y. Z. M. L. Ch. Segal, of Tel Aviv.

2. The word Pras means both reward and prize.

3. The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, page 17a."

4. Having only little bread.

5. Literally, "that it is not a living being that carries itself."

6. Does not truly have value.

7. Following blessings given by the Rebbe*.

8. In the manner in which one acts toward Him.

9. And the festival of Purim*.)
