To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,

Rav* David Meir (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from Pesach Sheini* (see note 2), in which you tell me that you have settled into your new house, with which you are very pleased. Nevertheless, the neighbors lack water, which is the Torah* (see note 3).

In my view, you should be pleased about this as well, and perhaps even more so than about the first point. Indeed, our Sages* emphasize, in Tractates Kiddushin* 30a and Bava Metzia* 85a, the importance of teaching Torah* to one's son, one's grandson, and the son of one's fellow. They then conclude by affirming the primacy of separating the grain from the chaff and teaching Torah* to the son of an ignorant person (see note 4).

For such is indeed the purpose of man — created to serve his Creator and to build a dwelling for Him here below. A person's house has no other purpose than to prepare the fulfillment of this mission. Indeed, it is said that "one who has no house is not a man," as the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Berachah, page 99b, Tractate Yevamos* 63a, as well as the Tosafos* and the Maharsha*, at that reference, explain.

A good and beautiful house grants a person breadth of spirit. It furthermore makes more fruitful the actions he carries out for the purpose of building the dwelling of the Holy One, blessed be He.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו מפסח שני, בו כותב אשר קבעו מגורם בדירה חדשה, ומעצם הדירה הנם שבעי רצון, אבל שכני המקום בלי מים זו תורה וכו'.

לדעתי צריך להיות שבע רצון גם מענין השני ואפשר יותר מענין הראשון, וכמובן ממרז"ל שלאחרי שהפליגו בגודל הענין דהמלמד את בנו תורה את בן בנו ואת בן חבירו תורה, מסיימים בגודל ההפלאה דלהוציא יקר מזולל המלמד את בן עם הארץ תורה (עיין קדושין ל, ע"א, ב"מ פה, א), והרי זה כל האדם שנברא לשמש את קונו ע"י שיעשה לו ית' דירה בתחתונים, ודירת האדם אינה אלא דרך והכשר לעבודה זו, מכיון שכל מי שאין לו בית דירה אינו אדם (עיין לקו"ת ברכה צט, ב. יבמות סג, א ובתוס' וחדא"ג שם), ודירה טובה וגם יפה מרחיבה דעתו של אדם ובמילא מצליח יותר בפעולותיו לעשות הדירה להקב"ה.
