may Hashem* grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 13 Iyar*, and you have surely received mine, which responded to your previous correspondence. You allude to the number of students, and I have already treated this subject at length in my previous letter (see note 1).

I therefore return only to the essential point. My opinion on this matter is very clear. The possibility, for whatever reason, of reducing the number of students stems from the fact that the administration (see note 2) has been accepting them (see note 3) with parsimony for several years already.

Nevertheless, Hashem*, in His great mercy, grants the possibility of Teshuvah*, and this is effective in this matter as well. However, it must conform to the teaching of the Torah*, which gives, in general, the following definition: "One who was accustomed to study one page (see note 4) must study two (see note 5)." As far as you are concerned, it is therefore necessary to increase the quantity of students and, obviously, their quality.

I have duly received your letters of 5 and 7 Iyar*.

What were the consequences of the visits you mentioned — that of the representatives of the United States, in your letter of 4 Adar*, and that of Mr. Regev, in your letter of 8 Nissan*?

Has the problem of the telephone at the school in Kfar Chabad* been resolved?

Concerning the first paragraph of your letter of 27 Nissan*, I have emphasized many times that there must be Chabad* people capable of assuming communal missions. And one must prepare them for this from the Yeshivah*. However, based on what you describe of the discussion that took place on this matter, one must ensure that it cannot be thought that they are in opposition to all the Yeshivos*.

There is, in the minutes (see note 6), a discussion on the need to improve the study of the revealed part of the Torah*, and the question is raised whether this will harm the study of Chassidus*. I am astonished and pained by this doubt. It is quite obvious that one must raise the level and strengthen the study of the revealed part of the Torah*. And it is consequently necessary to appoint a head of the Yeshivah*. But this in no way contradicts the study of Chassidus* or the fervor of prayer. I content myself with these few lines, for this idea constitutes an absolute truism.

You ask me to whom to repay the cost of the loan that was granted to you. It does not matter, obviously, who is the guarantor, and the one who contracted the loan must repay these costs (see note 7), just as he must repay the principal itself.

במענה על מכתבם מי"ג אייר - ובטח נתקבל מכתבי מענה על מכ' הקודמים...

במ"ש אודות מספר התלמידים וכו' כבר פירשתי שיחתי בארוכה במכתבי הנ"ל. ואחזור רק על הנקודה - שדעתי ברורה שהיכולת (מאיזה טעמים שיהי') למעט מספר התלמידים - ניתנה עי"ז שזה כמה שנים שההנהלה "מצמצמת" בקבלת תלמידים. אלא שכיון שברחמיו הרבים ניתן מהשי"ת ענין התשובה, גם בהנ"ל מועלת תשובה, אלא שצריכה להיות תשובה כפי הוראת תורתנו, שהנקודה בזה: הי' רגיל לקרות דף אחד יקרא ב' דפים כו', ובענינם הוא בהנוגע להגדלת כמות התלמידים ומובן שגם איכות התלמידים.

מה הן התוצאות בהמשך להביקורים שהזכירו במכתבם דד' אדר (נציגי ארצה"ב) וח' ניסן (מר רגב שי')?

ההסתדר ענין הטליפון בבי"ס אשר בכחב"ד?

במש"כ בס"א דמכ' כ"ז ניסן - הרי כ"פ עוררתי שצ"ל משרתים בקודש מחב"ד.

ומובן שצריך להכינם גם בהיותם בכותלי תו"ת, אבל פשוט שעל פי מש"כ ע"ד הדו"ד שהי' בזה - צריך להעשות באופן שלא יוכל להתפרש שהם יוצאים נגד כל הישיבות וכו'.

במש"כ בהפר"כ שקו"ט ע"ד נחיצות שיפור לימוד הנגלה ואם זהו סותר ללימוד דא"ח וכו' - נפלאתי ונצטערתי גם על הספק בזה, כי פשוט שצריך ומוכרח להעלות ולשכלל לימוד הנגלה (ובמילא מוכרח גם ר"י וכו'), ואין זה סותר ח"ו ללימוד דא"ח, לעבודת התפלה וכו'. - ולפשיטות כ"ז מסתפק הנני בשורות אלו.

בשאלתם על מי לשלם ההוצאות הקשורות עם ההלואה שקבלו - פשיטא שאינו נוגע מי הוא הערב. ועל הלוה לשלם גם הנ"ל, כמו שמשלם ההלואה עצמה.
