Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the thirtieth day of the Omer* (see note 1), in which you tell me that you are wondering about the meaning of what I wrote to you. I asked you, indeed, to endeavor to find a suitable match, with the greatest alacrity and by following natural means.
What I meant is very simple. One must adopt the practice of the great majority in this country, in our era — that is, to contact an effective intermediary who is likely to make a proposal to you, who has acquaintances in circles that observe the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. You will explain to him what conditions you wish to see fulfilled (see note 2).
You ask me whether the young woman must, from the outset, be one hundred percent religious, or whether it suffices that she commit to becoming so in the future.
Everything depends, in fact, on the personality of the one who formulates such a promise and whether one can trust her. She must, above all, know to what she is committing herself — that is, to know the authentic Jewish way of life.
May Hashem* grant that you share good news with me of all of this, and also of what you add at the end of your letter, concerning a greater commitment to the practice of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*.

במענה על מכתבו מיום ל' לעומר, בו כותב שמסתפק בכוונת כתבי, שצריך להשתדל בענין שידוך מתאים במרץ הכי גדול וגם בדרך הטבע.
וכוונתי פשוטה, לעשות כמנהג הרוב הכי גדול במדינה זו ובזמן זה, והיינו להתקשר עם ממוצע שדכן טוב וכזה יש לו היכירות בחוגים דשומרי תורה ומצוה, ומבארים לו התנאים שמחפשים וכו'.
ובמה שכותב אם צריכה להיות דתית במאה אחוז מקודם וכו' - או שמספיק הבטחה בנוגע להנהגה מכאן ולהבא.
זה תלוי בתכונת נפש המבטיחה ואם נאמנת בקיום הבטחתה, והעיקר אם יודעת מה מקבלת על עצמה היינו שיש לה מושג באורח חיים יהודי אמיתי וכו', והשי"ת יצליחו שיבשר טוב בהנ"ל, וכן במה שכותב בסיום מכתבו אודות הוספה בעניני תורה ומצות.
