To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,
Rav* Yitzchak (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, which was undated:
A) You ask me why Hashem* willed that it be so (see note 2).
Our Sages* have enunciated a great principle: "Why do you inquire into what is hidden before Hashem*?" This must be interpreted in the most literal sense, all the more so since each part of creation has its reason for being. Nothing is superfluous in the world. Each of these parts therefore receives the strength and the time necessary to carry out the mission assigned to it. If one squanders this time and these powers — including those of understanding and reflection — by devoting them to what does not belong to one's mission, one will no longer have them available when one must devote oneself to what truly belongs to one's mission.
B) You ask me how to understand what happened (see note 3) and also the fire at the Cheder*, in Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, and the books that were in it.
In general, the explanation that can be given in such a case is the following. No one can and no one will be able to dominate what concerns a Jew, particularly what belongs to the domain of holiness, unless that Jew himself experiences a weakness in the matter. In such a case, he personally prepares the place for an external attack.
All those who are concerned with such things must therefore examine their own conduct. Without doubt, they will discover that they showed disrespect toward these books or, more likely, that they did not study them as required, even though they were printed for that purpose.
The same applies to a certain person, whom those who possess free will surely did not help as required. Or perhaps they did not facilitate his service of Hashem*. It is for this reason that those who do not possess free will (see note 4) were able to dominate the situation.
Obviously, this is merely the general idea, common to all such events. But in each case, an investigation must be conducted in that place, covering the period that preceded the event. In this way, more precise and detailed points will be brought to light.
C) You ask me what conduct to adopt after the fire at the Cheder*.
In fact, everything depends on the custom of the place, and you must therefore consult the Rabbanim* who rule on Halachah* and who are on site or nearby. One must ask whether there were perhaps mixed dances in this Cheder*.
D) You mention the reading of a prayer for the observance of the upcoming Shabbos*, during Minchah* on the eve of the holy Shabbos*.
This is not part of the customs of the Chassidim* and does not appear in the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*.
E) You say that when this happened in your Kibbutz, you were studying the Parashah* in which it is said: "He shall break down the house."
You will consult the Midrash Rabbah*, at the end of this Parashah*, Chapter 17, according to which the spiritual dimension of what this verse describes corresponds to the situation of exile. Now, more profoundly, it is said regarding it, in accordance with the formulation of our Sages* (see note 5), that "it is because of our sins that we were exiled from our land."
The sin is the exile of the Divine soul that every Jew possesses and which is a "veritable spark of Divinity," thereby causing the exile of the spark of the Divine Presence that he carries within him. The result is the exile of the body in the concrete sense.
Such is the connection between these two elements — the Parashah* and the event. It is necessary to make an addition to the practice of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, particularly to the observance of the holy Shabbos*, which is defined as "a Shabbos* for Hashem*."
May Hashem* therefore preserve us from any weakening in this matter. This would be a form of exile, as this Parashah* explains. For the central point of the exile is the burning of the Temple, which underscores the gravity of the fast of the fifth month (see note 6). And the same is unfortunately true for the miniature Sanctuary that constitutes a place of prayer.
May Hashem* grant that you intensify your study of the Torah*, your observance of the Mitzvos*, and in particular your study of the profound dimension of the Torah*, instilling enthusiasm in the service of Hashem* and revealing the "fire of holiness." This latter dispels that of the "other side" in the spiritual dimension and thereby renders it materially impossible. And you will also influence your surroundings in this direction.
With my blessing to share good news,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary
