Greetings and blessings,

I received, in its time, your letter of 17 Nissan*, and I did not have the time to acknowledge receipt of it previously. Please excuse me for this.

It is, nevertheless, unfortunate that I did not have the opportunity to meet you during your last visit to America. For the superiority of speech over writing lies also in the fact that facial expression enables one to determine to what extent the words one says are accepted, what one must add to them, or what should be modified. Moreover, the interlocutor can respond directly. He therefore bears no resentment, even if what is said before him does not suit him.

Nevertheless, this was not possible (see note 2), and I therefore make use of writing. You tell me in your letter that you were a soldier and that you participated in all the battles of Israel. I will cite only a few points on this subject, for someone like you surely needs no further elaboration.

In a battle, there are different posts. Success and victory are achieved when each person uses all his strength to carry out his mission at a certain location, in accordance with the role assigned to him. How much more so must this be the case when this mission cannot be entrusted to anyone else. The importance of this condition can be deduced from the statement of our Sages* in Tractate Moed Katan* 9b, according to which "heavenly concerns" — that is, the Mitzvos* — "cannot equal" the Torah*. But if this Mitzvah* cannot be entrusted to anyone else, it is not only the equivalent of the words of Torah*, but can even override them.

Consequently, many are those who assume material and coarse tasks, while only a few, unfortunately, devote themselves to what is connected to faith. Yet these latter are always particularly cautious, wishing to offend no one. They therefore wear "silk gloves" (see note 3), while the opposing camp is full of boldness.

You can deduce from this the importance of the powers Hashem* has granted you for the purpose of instilling faith in others. You must not set aside this activity, even for a single moment, in favor of other concerns.

Hoping to receive your good news, with my respects and my blessing,

(Notes in the original:
