To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Saadya (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 9 Iyar*. I am surprised that you say nothing about the preparations for Lag BaOmer*, which is approaching. In general, you know that our Sephardic* brethren maintain a special relationship with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai* (see note 2). This year, it is furthermore a day on which the children are exempted from secular studies (see note 3).

I hope that you will indeed make use of this day in the appropriate manner. Likewise, you will consult together (see note 4) regarding the time of the giving of the Torah*, which approaches.

May Hashem* grant that you magnify and beautify the Torah*. In fact, I wrote to someone (see note 5) that one can magnify and beautify the Torah* at the most exalted level, just as one can do so at the lowest point (see note 6). The revealed part of the Torah* establishes this as well, since on the one hand, the Rambam* cites this verse regarding one who teaches Torah* to children, in his Yad HaChazakah*, Laws of Torah Study, end of Chapter 2, while on the other hand, Tractate Chullin* 66b mentions it regarding the Torah* that transcends action (see note 7).

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מט' אייר, ולפלא שאינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד הכנות מתאימות ליום הל"ג בעומר הבע"ל, שבכלל ידוע יחס המיוחד של אחינו הספרדים לרשב"י וכו'. והרי בשנה זו חל ביום שפנוים הנערים מלימודי חול וכו'. ותקותי שעכ"פ בפועל ינצלו את היום כדבעי, וכן יתדברו ביניהם בכגון דא בהנוגע לזמן מ"ת הבע"ל. והשי"ת יצליחו להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה וכמ"ש לאחד שענין זה (דיגדיל תורה ויאדיר) הוא שייך ומקומו בעומק תחת ועד עומק רום. וכדמוכח גם בנגלה דתורה מזה שהרמב"ם הביא כתוב זה למלמד תינוקות (בידו החזקה הלכות ת"ת ספ"ב), ומובא ג"כ בענין תורה שלמעלה ממעשה (חולין סו, ב).
