Greetings and blessings,

I have received news of you, with pleasure, through the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, devotes himself to communal needs, of manifold accomplishments, Rav* Shlomo Zalman Hecht (see note 1). I also received your request for a blessing, which will be read at a propitious moment at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. May Hashem* grant that you share good news with me of all of this.

As has been our habit until now, one toward the other — you yourself say nothing to me about the time you devote to the study of Chassidus*, and for my part, I will therefore emphasize to you that this is an absolute necessity, as I do each time.

Indeed, this obligation applies to everyone in our orphaned generation. I hope that, from time to time, you consult a Chassidic* book, but I am very much afraid that this practice is not fixed — particularly according to the meaning the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, gives to this term. According to him, true fixity is not only in time, but also in the spirit.

You know the teaching of the Mishnah* according to which "a wealthy person who brings the sacrifice of a poor person has not fulfilled his obligation." And the same is true in the moral domain, for "there is no wealth but of the spirit" and "there is no poverty but of the spirit."

Thus, one who is capable of profound study, of an increased quality and therefore quantity, cannot content himself with that which is characteristic of a "poor person in spirit." You must understand the meaning of this metaphor. And everything depends on your will. Indeed, you have the desire — which is the deeper dimension of the will — just as all Jews do, particularly those who observe the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, since "one Mitzvah* draws another" (see note 2).

May Hashem* grant you and me the merit that I receive good news from you — that at least in the future, you will fix, in your spirit and in time, a study of the profound dimension of the Torah* which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*.

With my blessing,

(Notes in the original:

2. Draws, in this case, the Mitzvah* of studying Chassidus*.)
