Igrot Kodesh · Letter 4310 — Tzedakah

Brooklyn, New York
To the Rav*, celebrated and renowned scholar, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav* Sh. Y. (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am enclosing a copy of the letter I am addressing to Mr. Shazar (see note 2). It is longer than what he usually receives, and some people, due to their many occupations, set aside long letters to read when they have more time. No doubt you will therefore endeavor to meet with him as soon as possible regarding the content of this letter, to which you will add your own explanations as needed.
It is unnecessary to specify that one must take advantage of the awareness in various circles prompted by the event (see note 3). Simultaneously, one must, at all costs, prevent the residents of Kfar Chabad* from becoming discouraged — Heaven forbid — while there is still time. Everything depends on the actions that will be taken and the diligence that will be demonstrated.
May Hashem* speak through your mouth (see note 4), and may you achieve success. I thank you for informing me of the developments that follow.
With my respects and my blessing,
M. Schneerson
These days, young rabbis from here are traveling to Jerusalem. They will attempt to convince the Chief Rabbinate in general, and Rav* Herzog Shlita* (see note 5) in particular, regarding the question and the controversy that have been raised here — to determine whether those who observe the Torah* and the Mitzvos* have the right to belong to a religious organization that counts among its members Conservative and Reform representatives (see note 6). Despite the halachic* ruling of prohibition issued by the Rabbanim* and the heads of the Yeshivos*, some — in particular among those making this trip — intend to maintain their participation.
Everything must be done not only to ensure that their mendacious position receives no support — Heaven forbid — but moreover, that the Chief Rabbis of Israel express themselves clearly, by issuing an absolute and unequivocal prohibition on this matter.
It is difficult to explain all of this in detail in a letter. I am therefore enclosing a photocopy of the halachic* ruling of the heads of the Yeshivos*, and also of my letter (see note 7), formulating a request to the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of manifold accomplishments and filled with ardor, Rav* David Hollander, that he meet with you at the first opportunity and report to you the chronology of events and their various aspects.
Obviously, you may tell the Chief Rabbi (see note 8) that I have written to you on this matter and transmit to him the content of my letter. I thank you in advance for sharing good news with me in this regard.
I have been asked what my position is on this subject in relation to the stand I took regarding the elections in the Holy Land. Indeed, among the candidates were men who, had they been in the United States, could have belonged to the Conservative movement (see note 9).
I responded that the difference is quite evident. As far as elections are concerned, the participation of those who observe the Torah* and the Mitzvos* does not signify that they recognize these individuals as representatives of a religious movement. This is not the case when it involves a "rabbinical" organization of New York, such as the rabbinical committee of New York, or a federation of synagogues, such as the council of American synagogues, whose very title establishes its religious character.
An Orthodox person belonging to this organization on the same footing as a Reform or Conservative rabbi, or a representative of their Temple, thereby recognizes that it is indeed a synagogue and that this man is indeed a Rav* — contrary to the halachic* ruling of our Torah*, in accordance with the statement of the Rambam* that I cite in my letter, and as common sense establishes.
Naturally, if you can introduce Rav* Hollander to those who are in a position to exert influence in this area, you will surely do so, and I thank you in advance.

1. Rav* Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Jerusalem. See, regarding him, Letters no. 3834, 4347, 4402, 4470, 4556, 4617, and 4696.
2. This refers to the preceding letter.
3. The terrorist attack at Kfar Chabad*. See Letter no. 4281 and the foreword.
4. During this meeting with Shneur Zalman Shazar.
5. The Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel.
6. See, regarding this, Letter no. 4306.
7. This refers to Letter no. 4162.
8. Herzog, previously cited.
9. Despite this, the Rebbe* had advocated the creation of a united front of the religious parties, including even these Reform Jews. Why did he not adopt the same position on this matter?)
