To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar* (see note 2), as well as the following one and the telegrams. Without doubt, you have already been informed of the telegram (see note 3) that I sent to the Kfar* and also to the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* (see note 4). You can deduce from it what I think of the surprising proposal you formulate — that of leaving Lod*.

On the other hand, it is necessary to immediately contact the relevant authorities and persons in order to strengthen security. I have been asked here why there is no wire fence around the Kfar*, or a searchlight at its highest point, or guard dogs. Likewise, questions should be asked about the orchards (see note 5). It has been pointed out that various locations within them can serve as hiding places. Furthermore, they make searches more difficult (see note 6).

You contemplate making a communication to the world press. I am surprised that you formulate such a proposal. Indeed:

A) Past experience has proven that this has no concrete benefit. In fact, all the figures to whom you propose to appeal paid no attention during the terrible years of 5701 (see note 7).

B) One may think that pressure exerted in this manner will, on the contrary, strengthen the victory of the camp of opponents.

C) The essential point — one seems to forget that there are thousands upon thousands of students in the Chabad* schools, numerous teachers and supervisors, such as Rabbanim* Matusof, Lipsker, and Pinson (see note 8). An appeal to the press will be heard there as well. You understand the harm (see note 9) that could result from this, Heaven forbid.

Without making a great show of it, several actions have been undertaken here to address the leadership, with a strong and determined reaction. But this has not surfaced in the public domain. Nevertheless, the pressure has been greater than that which can be exerted through newspapers. You must understand what I mean.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מאדר"ח אייר ושלאחריו וכן המברקים, ובודאי כבר נודע לו מכבר מהמברק ששלחתי לכפר וכן לישיבת תו"ת, שמהם מובנת השקפתי אודות הצעה המוזרה להעתיק מלוד וכו' אבל לאידך גיסא מוכרח שיבואו תיכף בקישור עם המשרדים והאנשים המתאימים בהנוגע לתוספת שמירה, ושאלוני כאן מפני מה אין גדר תיל סביבות הכפר או זרק-אור נמצא במקום היותר גבוה בכפר, כלבים שמשתמשים בהם לשמירה וכיו"ב, כן כדאי הי' להעלות השאלה אודות הפרדסים, כיון שכמה מקומות העירו אשר משמשים הם מקום מחבוא מקשים על החפוש.

במ"ש אודות מכ' בעתונות העולמית וכו' תמיהני גם על ההצעה בזה, כיון א) ע"פ הנסיון שבעבר אין בזה כל תועלת ממשית בהנוגע לפועל; ובמכש"כ וק"ו שאישים מאלו שהציעו לפנות אליהם, לא שמו לב להנעשה בשנים האיומות דתש"א וכו'. ב) יש מקום לומר שהלחץ באופן כזה, אדרבה יגדיל מדת הנצחון של הצד שכנגד. ג) והוא העיקר, שכנראה שוכחים לגמרי שישנם אלפים ואלפים תלמידים-ות בבתי ספר חב"ד, להם כמה מורים ומשגיחים וכמו הרבנים מתוסוף, ליפסקר, פינסן וכו' שי' ופני' בעתונות הנ"ל בודאי תגיע לשם תומ"י ומובן החשש לענינים ח"ו שיכולה לגרום. באופן בלתי פרסומי כ"כ עשו כאן כמה פעולות בפני' להראשים כאן בתגובה חזקה ונמרצה; אבל לא ברשות הרבים, ומאידך גיסא בלחץ יותר חזק מאשר לחץ של עתונים וד"ל...
