To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Dov Ber (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*. I took note, with pleasure, of the name you chose for your son (see note 2), who will have long life. It happens that we had the same idea, but, as I emphasized in my previous letter, it is not the custom to give instructions in this matter (see note 3). I therefore reiterate my blessing that you raise him, together with your wife, to Torah*, to the marriage canopy, and to good deeds, with breadth of spirit.

You mention the problem of tonsils. In general, those who catch cold from time to time because they suffer from this are affected only in autumn and winter, but not in summer. There is therefore no reason to respond to this question (see note 4) now. You will consult your doctor once more (see note 5). If he is of the same opinion as I am, you will revisit this question in a few months. In the meantime, each and every one of you, and all of you together, will have a summer in good health.

You describe the distribution of Matzah Shemurah* and I am pleased with this. You conclude by saying that all beginnings are difficult, or, in any case, present some difficulties. But what are these difficulties, since you do not expect any compensation in return? Moreover, the Tur* and the Shulchan Aruch*, in the glosses of the Rama*, begin with: "One should not be ashamed before those who mock." Furthermore, the opponents, in our era, are diminishing more and more, both in number and in importance.

No doubt you will not content yourself with the classes you describe to me. You will add others, as you say at the end of your letter. You will give them in particular to young people, and you will speak to them about the background of Chassidus*, which is sometimes of great effect.

Likewise, one must plan an appropriate program in order to make use of Lag BaOmer*, which this year falls on a day when students do not attend school (see note 6).

May Hashem* grant that you share good news with me about all of this, and also about the activities of your wife.

You ask me where to give a class in Chassidus*. You know the talk (see note 7) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, according to which one must choose a place where there are many people or much foot traffic, as is the case for a business (see note 8). No doubt, those who are of only marginal importance (see note 9) will not seek to intervene and impose their authority. If they do, you can always transfer this class to your home. But this possibility will surely be sufficient to prevent their intervention. You must understand what I mean.

With my blessing,

(Notes in the original:

1. Rav* D. B. Lewin, of Sunderland, England. See, regarding him, Letters no. 4170 and 4590.

2. Yosef Yitzchak, after the name of the previous Rebbe*, although the grandfather of the recipient of this letter was named Yosef Elchanan Shagalov. He had been imprisoned in Russia in 5697–1937, and no trace of him was found. However, at the time of the writing of this letter, it was not yet known whether he was alive or not.

3. It is not for the Rebbe* to substitute for the parents in choosing a name for a newborn child.

4. Should this child be operated on now or not?

5. To ask whether this question can be postponed.

6. A Sunday.

7. See Letter no. 3148.

8. Which must also be well situated to attract customers. See, regarding this, Letters no. 4110, 4449, and 4487.

9. And attempt to oppose these classes.)
