To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Yochanan (see note 1), the Shochet*, Gabbai* of the Lubavitch synagogue, at Lubavitch (see note 2),

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to receive your leaflet, with what was enclosed (see note 3). I send you a receipt, on behalf of the institutions bearing the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in our Holy Land — "a land that Hashem* observes constantly, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year."

Indeed, this land is protected by you and by those like you — by people who strengthen themselves and endeavor to increase the number of students and the hours of study. It is thanks to you that "Hashem* builds the house" and "Hashem* guards the city" (see note 4).

Rabbi Abba Bar Kahana began to develop an explanation on this subject. Rav Assi and Rav Ami elaborated on his words, emphasizing that these expressions refer to the scholars and those who study the Torah* day and night (see note 5), as stated at the beginning of Midrash* Eichah Rabbah*.

May Hashem* grant that very soon, in kindness and mercy, Hashem* arouse a spirit upon everyone within all of Israel, so that one may see with one's eyes, hear with one's ears, and perceive in one's heart, that "we invoke the Name of Hashem*" and "He sends us His help from the holy place." He will keep His promise and "answer us on the day we call upon Him," with the true and complete Redemption.

נעם לי לקבל הפתקא שלו ביחד עם המצורף אליו, ומוסגר בזה קבלה ממוסדות אשר על שם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע אשר באה"ק ת"ו, ארץ אשר ה' אלקיך דורש אותה מראשית השנה עד אחרית שנה אשר הם הן - וכדוגמתם - המגינים עלי', ועל כל המחזיק בהם ומשתדל בהוספה עליהם הן במספר התלמידים והן בשעות הלימוד הם הגורמים וממשיכים אשר ה' יבנה בית וה' ישמר עיר וגו' וכאשר פתח ההסברה בזה רבי אבא בר כהנא וביארו הדבר ר' אסי ור' אמי, אשר הסופרים ומשנים שהם הוגים ומשנים את התורה ביום ובלילה כו' (מדרש איכה רבה בתחלתו) ויה"ר שבקרוב ממש ובחסד וברחמים יערה רוח ממרום על כאו"א בתוך כלל ישראל ואז יראה בעיניו ובאזניו ישמע ולבבו יבין, אשר אנחנו בשם ה' אלקינו נזכיר והוא ישלח עזרתו מקדש ויקוים הבטחתו, יעננו ביום קראנו בגאולה האמיתית והשלימה.
