Greetings and blessings,

You mention the dissensions. Now, I have written repeatedly that you must consult the writings of the Alter Rebbe* and his successors. In this way, you will determine the source of the discord and understand its gravity. Indeed, if this is the case when the peace is absolute, how much more so... (see note 1).

When there are two camps in this world, it is practically impossible that one be entirely right and the other entirely wrong. Each is partially at fault. Moreover, Chassidus* explains the meaning of the verse: "As the face reflects in water" (see note 2).

It is certain that much good has been lost until now due to the lack of rapprochement, because of the honor to which one lays claim. One must not deceive oneself to the point of thinking that the motivation is the fear of Hashem* or a stronger commitment to Chabad*. The Alter Rebbe* and every Rebbe in his generation wrote that the opposite is true — from the commentary "Enlist for yourselves" by the Alter Rebbe*, to the Chassidic* discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, printed in the addenda to this fascicle "Enlist for yourselves," which you should consult.

Unfortunately, even when one becomes aware of all this, some subsequently change their position and say: "Why seek Teshuvah* on account of this? Why grant others mitigating circumstances, to the point of being 'humble before every person'?" Yet the Alter Rebbe* specifies even on this matter: "truly humble," and as is emphasized elsewhere, he chose the version of this text that says "the person," with a definite article.

They therefore do the opposite. With warmth, they invite others to Teshuvah*. Then, with no less ardor, they accord themselves all the mitigating circumstances, in the best possible manner, as it is said: "Self-love covers all faults." They demand humility from others toward them. Yet it is known that eating round Matzah Shemurah* on Pesach*, or staying awake the entire night of Shavuos*, does not change the relations one may have with other people. One must have pleasant contact with one's fellow. Only after that are such practices desirable.

These remarks must be concluded on a positive note. The verse, which the Alter Rebbe* cites as a Halachah* in his Laws of Torah Study, says: "None of us will be cast away." This is a certainty. May Hashem* grant that this occur as quickly as possible, with kindness and mercy. Very soon, "the wicked will abandon his way and the man of iniquity, his thoughts." A Chassidic* discourse of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in the commentaries on marriage, explains all of this. The man of iniquity (see note 3) is also the man of strength (see note 4). And just as the wicked must abandon his way, the one who strongly marks his personality must cease to do so. You should consult this explanation according to which, when one spreads oneself out in the house of study (see note 5), one is jostled by anyone who takes a step in it.

In this way, all will unite as one person and will attach themselves to our holy masters, who connect us to Hashem*, our Elokim*. This peace and unity will protect each person, together with all the members of his family, within the entire people of Israel, as a fortified wall, as it is said: "Bless us, our Father, all as one, with the light of Your Countenance" — "with the light of the Countenance of the King of life."
