Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 25 Nissan*, with the excerpt that was enclosed. You tell me that I interpreted your words as implying that you fast until the middle of the night (see note 1). This is not the case. I understood well that you fast during the first half of the day. Nevertheless, this is not the way of Chassidus*, as I stated in my previous letter. I also specified to you what can replace these fasts, and indeed, on the contrary... (see note 2).

I hope you will adopt this approach. In this way, you will achieve success. Obviously, this concerns only the fasts one undertakes on one's own initiative, but not those mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch*. This is quite clear.

You make reference to Rav* Goldschmit (see note 3). Now, while it is important and judicious to study Chassidus*, it is equally fundamental to find several people — or at least one person — with whom you can study as equals, or at least with a bond of closeness. Indeed, our Sages* say in the Mishnah*: "Appoint for yourself a teacher and acquire for yourself a friend."

In other words, one acquires a friend as one makes any acquisition — that is, by giving money. And one must be prepared also to give of one's strength to have a friend. On occasion, I will also address Rav* Goldschmit, but in any case, it is particularly important that you find yourself a friend in the manner just described. In this way, your study will be much more fruitful.

I am surprised that you do not specify what the activities of your wife are, having retained her position in the domain of proper education. May Hashem* grant that she succeed in instilling a true fear of Hashem* in her students.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ה ניסן עם הקטע המוסגר בו, ומה שכותב שכנראה פירשתי דבריו שמתענה עד חצות לילה, לא כן הוא, שהבנתי שמתענה עד חצות היום, ובכל זה לא זוהי דרך החסידות וכמו שכתבתי לו במכתבי הקודם, וגם כתבתי במה אפשר להחליף התעניות ואדרבה וכו' ותקותי שיתנהג כן ויהי' בהצלחה. מובן אשר האמור לעיל אודות התעניות הוא רק בתעניות שרוצים להוסיף על דעת עצמו ולא התעניות שמצווים בהם בשולחן ערוך, ופשוט.

במה שכותב אודות הרב גולדשמיד שי', הנה עד כמה שנחוץ ונכון ללמוד תורת החסידות עם אחד בתור רב, הנה נחוץ ועוד יותר למצוא אחדים ועכ"פ אחד שיכול להסתדר עמדו בלימוד בתור חבר, ועל כל פנים תלמיד חבר, וכדיוק חכמנו ז"ל במשנה, עשה לך רב וקנה לך חבר, היינו שלרכוש חבר צריך להיות על דרך קני' שבא על ידי בזבוז ממון, וכן נחוץ לבזבז כחות ובלבד לרכוש חבר. בהזדמנות אפנה, גם להרב גולדשמיד שי' אבל ביחד עם זה הנה נכון במאד מאד שימצא חבר ע"ד הנ"ל, ואז תתרבה ההצלחה בלימודו.

לפלא שאינו כותב במה מתעסקת זוגתו תחי' ואשר ממשיכה בשטח החינוך הכשר, ויה"ר שתצליח להחדיר יראת שמים אמיתית בהתלמיד'.

בברכה להצלחה בכל האמור לעיל, ולבשורות טובות בהנוגע לעצמו לזוגתו ולכל המשפחה שיחיו.
