To Shlomo, who is called Dr. Heidelberg,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter of 28 Sivan* and your books on the Responsa* of Rabbeinu Gershon Meor HaGolah*, as well as the fascicle of Dr. Chaim Beinart (see note 1). As you request, I will acknowledge receipt to him. I thank you for all of this.
To the extent that my time permitted, and as a mark of appreciation, I perused the Responsa* of Rabbeinu Gershon Meor HaGolah*. It is evident that you invested much effort in this work. May Hashem* grant that the statement of our Sages* be fulfilled in you: great is study that leads to action.
Study and action are "longer than the earth," and it is said that "Your commandment is exceedingly broad." However good your current situation may be in these two domains, it is therefore possible to add and to improve, without limit.
It is surely unnecessary to counsel you to be generous toward others, leading them to the study of our Torah* — to teach, to guard, to do, and to fulfill. Moreover, one can observe, precisely in our era, a search for truth, after the disappointment aroused by the ideals of the various parties and of other nations. No period has been more propitious than this one, particularly for one who is capable of positively guiding those around him.
You have surely heard what is reported and published, in various places, in the name of a great one of our people. Why was it precisely Rabbeinu Gershon* who was called Meor HaGolah* (see note 2)? Because the two institutions he introduced illuminate the Jewish people during the time of exile.
He is therefore Meor HaGolah*, because "he enacted that one may not take a second wife and that one may not divorce without the wife's consent. Consequently, there is no reason to fear that Hashem* will exchange us for another people. He cannot compel us to divorce. And the prophet says: 'Where is the bill of divorce of your mother?' We have faith in what He has said: 'You shall be pleasing to Me...' and He will therefore not choose another people, for He cannot take a second wife, if one may express it thus. It is regarding this that it is said: 'You are bound to Me for eternity.'"
Such was the error of the scholars of Israel, at a certain period (see note 3), who conducted research on cuneiform script, on the laws of Hammurabi, and on a defunct culture. It was therefore impossible for them to arrive at correct conclusions (see note 4). It is clear that one approaches what is living differently, that one prepares for it differently.
Granted, logically, these two elements (see note 5) are independent. However, one can observe that the opposite is true, as a brief teaching of our Sages* establishes. Why does the Halachah* follow his opinion (see note 6)? Not because of the depth of his understanding and reasoning, compared to those of others, but precisely because "Hashem* is with him," as stated in Tractate Sanhedrin* 92b. And regarding the holy men of Israel, although "the one and the other express the opinion of the living Elokim*," the one who merits that the Halachah* follow his opinion is pleasant and conciliatory (see note 7), whereas the other (see note 8) is more acerbic, as stated in Tractate Eruvin* 13b.
This will enable us to understand a teaching of our Sages* that may appear surprising. One studies the Torah* after the prayer, as stated in Tractate Berachos* 5b. And this Torah* is a Torah of life and a Torah of truth (see note 9), as explained in the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, Devarim, at page 96c.
With my blessing of success in all that has been said and to share good news regarding all of this,
(Notes in the original:
1. See, regarding this, Letter no. 4463.
2. The Luminary of the Exile.
3. This follows from the preceding paragraph, affirming the propitious character of this period.
4. For they observed Judaism as an inheritance of the past.
5. Intellectual analysis and life.
6. That of the Sage whose opinion is adopted.
7. As is said of Beis Hillel*.
8. In this case, Beis Shammai*.
9. And one should therefore study it even before the prayer. In fact, to understand it, one must be conciliatory, which is made possible by prayer.)
