To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Yehoshua Shneur Zalman (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I received, in due time, your letter from the end of the month of Adar*, and last week I had relatively detailed news through your son-in-law, the Chassid*, Mr. Wirdiger. What you have now accomplished in your location is particularly important. It cannot be imagined, and there are no words to express it.
I hope that the Chassidim* on the ground are aware of this — that they do not merely see it, but, in the term employed by Chassidus*, that they observe it strongly, to the point of being profoundly affected, of feeling the desire and the eagerness to commit themselves more strongly, to the extent of their possibilities and means. Your success, expressed by the number of students, suffices to demonstrate all of this, beyond any hesitation.
You mention the limited time devoted to sacred studies. There are certainly several subjects in the program that is called secular to which one can impart a sacred content. This is the case with history, for example, which can be studied through the Tanach* — the books of Yehoshua*, Shoftim*, Shmuel*, and Divrei HaYamim*.
Obviously, this is not sufficient, and the proposal to approach the Ministry of Education is therefore particularly judicious. Given the distinctive character of the Yeshivah* — especially as it is the only one in the entire country, where a good education based on Torah* and Mitzvos* is provided, which cannot be done elsewhere — one must indeed, from the earliest classes that prepare for the higher ones, intensify the sacred studies.
You no doubt have contacts within this ministry who will indicate to you how to formulate the request in the most effective manner, and above all how to obtain a favorable outcome — especially since in Australia, religion is a matter of state, which is not the case in the United States. The authorities therefore bear the responsibility of meeting the needs in this matter, and above all of granting the study hours. It is almost certain that rabbinical endorsements will be useful in this area.
It is not always judicious to publicize such steps. One must not frighten the few parents who might think that the administration wishes to eliminate secular studies entirely. I leave this to your judgment.
It is, of course, out of the question to eliminate the Talmud Torah* on account of those who come after regular school hours, especially since there is no doubt that some of them will eventually continue their studies at the Yeshivah*, including in the morning.
Regarding the question of administration in general and the financial situation in particular, I have already written several times that, insofar as possible, you should entrust the technical aspects to others. You, on the other hand, will be the director and the supervisor in all domains that involve responsibility. In this way, the administration and the general functioning will be satisfactory.
You should therefore not be disturbed by technical problems, which also includes teaching the class you mention, and all the more so bookkeeping and writing donation receipts. You will have authority over all of this, and it is therefore not necessary for the work to be done by Chassidim*. You will choose someone who adheres to your instructions.
You ask me whether one may open a girls' section of the Yeshivah* in this building. It is no doubt possible to ensure that this section is supervised at all times (see note 2). If so, the proposal is judicious.
You tell me that you have engaged a teacher for the girls, and I am pleased by this. You ask me whether this should be included in the activities of the Yeshivah* and whether it should be communicated to the donors. The answer to this question depends on their state of mind. In general, it is good to tell the truth, and this is indeed an accomplishment of the Chassidim*. Nevertheless, one must not frighten them by leading them to believe that expenses will increase disproportionately. For that matter, in our era, the fact that men who fear Hashem* strive to ensure a good education for girls as well makes a very good impression.
You mention your outreach to the women and girls of Chabad* on this matter. This is positive as well. Perhaps they will be drawn to increase Chabad* activities in general. There will therefore be many additional members.
With my blessing for considerable success in all that has been said, in good health and with good spirits, as the situation permits,
(Notes in the original:
