To the young man, the Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Naphtali (see note 1) HaCohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me of your sacred mission of educating Jewish children in the fear of Hashem*, the study of Torah*, and the observance of the Mitzvos*. Fortunate is your lot and great is your merit. There are no words to express the importance of drawing the children of Israel close to our Father Who is in Heaven.

You mention the curriculum of the instruction you must transmit to them. The study of the laws necessary for daily life must, of course, be included. This constitutes the first priority, and our Sages* say that "action is essential, and not the theory." You will no doubt be able to determine the most urgent points, and it is said in this regard as well: "Salvation comes through many counselors."

Another point: you spend a relatively limited amount of time with them. You must therefore awaken in them the desire to engage in the same subjects after they have left your company, at home or at the synagogue. To this end, you will begin telling a story and tell them that the continuation can be found in such-and-such a book or in such-and-such a place. You tell me that you have convinced several young men to adopt Chassidic* customs. How much more so will this be the case for your students.

You mention the wearing of the large Tallis* before marriage. It is said on this subject that one must conform to the custom of the environment in which one finds oneself. On the other hand, for the Priestly Blessing* (see note 2), it is clear that one must wear a large Tallis*. It does not seem to me that there is a divergent practice in this matter.

במענה על מכתבו, בו מודיע אודות עבודתו בקדש להדריך ילדי בני ישראל ביראת שמים בלימוד תורה ובקיום מצותי', ואשרי חלקו שזכה לזה, אשר גודל ענין קירוב בני ישראל לאבינו שבשמים, אין די באר. ובמ"ש אודות תכנית הלימודים עמהם, מובן שצריך להיות נכלל לימוד הלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים של המושפעים שלו, וזה בא לכל לראש, וכמאמר רז"ל לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה. ובטח יכול לברר לאיזה פרטים נזקקים ביותר, וגם על זה נאמר ותשועה ברוב יועץ. ועוד נקודה בזה כיון שזמן היותו עמהם יחד מצומצם הוא, צריך לעורר בהם חשק אשר גם בהלכם מאתו ימשיכו, בביתם או בבית הכנסת, באותם הענינים אודותם מדבר ומשפיע עליהם, והוא על ידי שיתחיל בסיפור ענין ויאמר להם שהמשכו נמצא בספר פלוני במקום פלוני וכיו"ב. וכיון שכפי שכתבו כבר הצליח להשפיע על איזה אברכים בהנוגע למנהגי חסידות, עאכו"כ שיצליח כהנ"ל במושפעיו האמורים.

במ"ש אודות לבישת טלית גדול קודם הנשואין, הנה על כגון זה נאמר, שצריך לנהוג כמנהג הסביבה בה נמצא, אבל פשיטא שנשיאת כפים צ"ל בלבישת טלית, וכמדומה שאין כל חילוקי מנהגים בזה.
