Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter, which followed a particularly long interruption. I thank you for the good news you share — the improvement in your state of health.
You mention the Chassidic* gatherings, whose fruits can be observed with eyes of flesh. Nevertheless, these are nothing compared to the true fruits, even if the evil inclination* sows confusion through various means. One of these consists of wondering whether such gatherings truly serve any purpose. The Chassidic* discourses and talks specify the manner in which it intervenes in this area.
You report to me the words of your attending physician regarding your state of health, and you emphasize the difficulty of your work, especially since you are simultaneously carrying out Chabad* activities. Consequently, you fear being compelled to reduce these activities.
I am surprised that you do not sense the profound darkness of the period of exile*, even when things are pointed out to you explicitly. Indeed, you arrive at conclusions that are the opposite of what they should be, contradicting even elementary logic. If you had reflected on what I wrote to you — and what you read upon receiving my letter — while avoiding the corruption induced by ill will, you would have seen that all of this is not meant for you.
But I did not have the merit that my words be accepted. Consequently, a physician came and told you the same thing as I did, but in much more forceful terms. Obviously, he was referring to the body and not to the soul. Yet this too remained without effect, and you will excuse me for observing that you have decided to stand by the opposite conclusions, to abandon what you have been doing until now in the domain of Chabad* and to maintain your position.
I do not know whether elaborating on my remarks would be of any use. You have been shown explicitly what your activity is, and this continues to be shown. May Hashem* grant that very soon, in kindness and mercy, you begin to take upon yourself what is your true mission in the place where you currently find yourself. This mission was entrusted to you from the moment you arrived there, and all other considerations are strictly secondary. You will therefore carry it out with joy and enthusiasm, for you will have finally understood what is being conveyed to you.
It is clear that I do not lose sight of the need for you to earn a livelihood, but the Yeshivah* can provide you with the means to live honorably, together with the members of your family. Moreover, your benefit will go beyond the salary you receive. Had you proceeded in this manner two or three years ago, your situation would have been materially healthier and your surroundings, spiritually healthier. Everything depends only on your will.
With my blessing to share good news regarding all of this,
P.S.: These words have a "general" bearing, and it is therefore not excluded that certain "astute" merchants among the Chassidim* of your city will attempt to explain to you that my position does not suit them, that all of this is not elegant for people of the same background. You may, in my name, give them the following response.
In fact, I consider that all the Chassidim* who came from Russia should derive the means of their subsistence from their direct activity on behalf of the Yeshivah*. Indeed, they receive the blessing, in any case, through its intermediary. Nevertheless, they persist in earning their livelihood by following a coarse path, engaging in commerce in markets and streets, which imposes dreadful hardships upon them. They thus multiply the veils and obstacles, for the blessing must pass through various stages before reaching them. Moreover, a portion of it is lost, and unfortunate circumstances result from this — for example, the need to pay physicians. You must understand what I mean.
May Hashem* grant that at least in the future, you earn your livelihood in this manner, reducing the veils and obstacles. In this way, you will be able to satisfy more amply your needs and those of the members of your family, including in the material domain. You will be satisfied and you will avoid hardships. In addition, you will be able to invest your knowledge, your strength, and your energy in true pursuits.
There is no need to say more, so evident is this. But this is precisely where the entire problem lies. Everyone perfectly understands this situation when reading it in a book or explaining it to someone else whom it concerns. On the other hand, when it pertains to one's own person, all of this analysis is no longer of any use. You must understand what I mean.
It is quite clear that I bear you no ill will. Nevertheless, it is high time to acknowledge the truth, even if it were only placed on the table — and all the more so when it constitutes an incontestable reality, as we have just demonstrated.
With my blessing to share good news,
