Igrot Kodesh · Letter 4251 — Faith & Bitachon

To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Yaakov (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
A point concerning the law of the Mezuzah* has reached me (see note 2). When there is a contradiction between the position of the hinge and the customary usage, our holy master — and some say even the Alter Rebbe* — gave an instruction on this matter, in accordance with a tradition received by the elder Chassidim*.
I have heard, here, different formulations of this tradition. I would therefore be grateful if you would let me know whether you have knowledge of it and, if so, in what form (see note 3). The more detailed your response, the better.
With my blessing,
(Notes in the original:
1. Rav* Y. Landa, of Bnei Brak. See, regarding him, Letter no. 1238.
2. See, regarding this, Letters no. 4227 and 4237.
3. The response of Rav* Landa was as follows: 'By an effect of the kindness of Hashem*, I had the merit, when I was near the Holy of Holies — our master, whose merit protects us — of being summoned each time he affixed a Mezuzah*, so that I would accompany him and he would indicate to me what should be done. He conveyed to me the following principle, in the name of the Rebbe Maharash*. However, he never mentioned a tradition from the Alter Rebbe*. Apart from the first door that must bear a Mezuzah*, one must take into account only the position of the hinge. For this first door, however, it is placed on the right, even if the door opens outward. He also told me that in his house, before an upper floor was built, there was a room in which he subsequently granted private audiences to Chassidim*. All its doors opened outward, and the Rebbe Maharash* himself placed Mezuzos* on all the doors according to the position of the hinge. This means that no door opened into the room, and the Rebbe asked his father: "How will one enter?" The Rebbe Maharash*, his father, replied: "I do not care. Let them jump through the window!" (See also what Rav* Zalman Shimon Dvorkin says on this subject in the Kovetz Razach, page 57).')
