Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from before the festival of Pesach*, in which you tell me that your spiritual self-assessment has served no purpose and that you see no fruits from it. Various texts establish that in such a case, the assessment emanates from a source that is not pure.

The Rebbe Rashab* specifies how one can determine this source (see note 1), and his words are reproduced in the Hayom Yom*. If this assessment disturbs concrete action, it emanates from the one who plots (see note 2). And, as your letter indicates, your reflection caused your discouragement and thereby weakened your actions.

As I have already written to several Chassidim* (see note 3), it is known what our Torah* rules, including in its revealed dimension, concerning the destruction of physical chametz*, which a person must search for. If he discovers it, he will eliminate it. But if he does not see it with the faculties at his disposal and therefore has nothing to burn, he will have fulfilled the Mitzvah* properly nonetheless, having discharged his duty. For the Torah* was not given to angels.

Thus, even if your arguments were justified, you have done your duty, expressed reproof, and even put into practice the injunction: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." One must therefore strive to make that fellow better. Moreover, it is almost certain that your assessment is false, as I was saying. It is said in this regard that "one action is preferable to a thousand sighs."

You will therefore continue your work with those around you. In doing so, you are fulfilling the mission that Hashem* has entrusted to you. And nothing is impossible for Him. Ultimately, your words will therefore have their proper effect.

You tell me that you are being asked about the beneficiaries who will inherit your possessions. It seems to me that the same practice also exists in the United States. Those who have no children are asked, after a hundred and twenty years, to bequeath these possessions to an institution. And all of this surely does not prevent you from making gifts throughout your lifetime, for long days and good years.

You will surely tell me how you made use of Pesach*, the time of our liberation. May Hashem* grant that it be a good preparation for the festival of Shavuos*, which approaches, as it is said: "When you bring the people out of Egypt, you shall serve Hashem* upon this mountain."

With my blessing to share good news,
