20 Nissan* 5716

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 10 Nissan*. There is no reason to apologize to me for having written here. On the contrary, I am very pleased to be of service to anyone, in whatever manner.

As for your particular situation, you present various reasons to explain to me that this is not a flight from battle. However, experience has shown that it is not so — that a Jew, especially one to whom Hashem* has granted qualities of an educator, capable of influencing others, must indeed guide those around him. However, his words must emanate from his heart. It is in this way that they penetrate the hearts of those who hear him.

Most of the time, the results do not appear immediately. But, in accordance with the teaching of our holy masters, an effort is never in vain. Moreover, you yourself acknowledge that there are virtually no leaders imbued with the fear of Hashem* in your locality.

You tell me that your eldest son is of an age to receive an education (see note 1), while the success you have had with your community is doubtful (see note 2).

You know the teaching of our Sages* on this matter: a person must do what is in his power, in accordance with the teachings of our Torah*, the Torah of life. One must reprove, rebuke, even go so far as to strike. It is self-evident that the fulfillment of one Mitzvah* cannot prevent the fulfillment of another Mitzvah*, in this case that of education — "and you shall teach your children." On the contrary, one Mitzvah* draws another in its wake.

Furthermore, Hashem* acts in this matter "measure for measure" (see note 3), but in a greatly increased manner. And when one draws one's fellow close to the Torah* of Hashem* and His Mitzvos*, one certainly receives from the Creator of the world increased success in guiding one's own son toward the Torah* and the Mitzvos*.

May Hashem* guide you in a positive manner before Him, materially and spiritually at once.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,

The secretary

1. Which implies the necessity of drawing closer to a place where he can receive this education.

2. Which makes it less difficult to leave it. The addressee of this letter is presumably the Rav of this community.

3. In the manner in which one acts toward Him.)
