17 Nissan* 5716

Brooklyn

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Chaim (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 8 Nissan*, in which you describe your sacred mission within the public Talmud Torah* in the neighborhood where you reside. You tell me that the classes are increasing, both in quantity and in quality.

May Hashem* grant that you not be content with what has been accomplished until now, and that you redouble your efforts according to your abilities. In this way, you will multiply many times over the success that Hashem* grants you. For our Sages* say, "When a person sanctifies himself a little here below..." (see note 2).

Fortunate is the lot that Divine Providence* has entrusted to you — that of teaching Torah* to the children of Israel! No doubt you precede all of this with the outer keys, as it is said: "The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Hashem*." You therefore speak words of encouragement before those who attend your lessons, and in the classes in which you teach the laws that one must know on a daily basis (see note 3).

Often, those who study the Talmud*, the Poskim*, and the Rishonim* in depth have an imperfect knowledge of these everyday laws. And our Sages* say: "A transgression committed inadvertently due to a lack of knowledge..." (see note 4). Obviously, one should not feel any embarrassment about this (see note 5), Heaven forbid.

Several of the great ones of our people had a fixed study session in these everyday, practically applicable laws. Mention of this is made in the Written Torah*, and then again in the Oral Torah*, as it is said: "You shall fear Hashem*... for this is the entire purpose of man." Our Sages* specify that "action is essential, and not the theory." It is unnecessary to say more, so evident is this, and my remark was only intended to refute the opinion of those who err and go astray. This is particularly true in our Holy Land*, in which several laws specific to this land additionally apply.

With my blessing to share good news regarding all of this,

(The Rebbe Shlita* did not sign this letter due to the sanctity of the festival, and I therefore do so in his place.

The secretary)

P.S.: You surely know of the three daily study sessions pertaining to every individual, established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. They cover the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known. You will adopt them, at least from now on.

(Notes in the original:

1. Rav* H. Zorotski, of Chadera.

2. Hashem* sanctifies him greatly from Above.

3. See, regarding this, Letter no. 3892.

4. Is considered as though it had been deliberately committed.

5. On account of teaching such simple laws.)
