You ask me about Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, which states that prayer is a mitzvah* instituted by the Torah*. You will find its reproduction in the Mishnas Yoel of Rav Y. Diskin, and you should see what is said at that reference.

One may ask why it is stated in his Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, Chapter 106, end of paragraph 2: "This is the position that must be retained." The answer to this question is found at the beginning of the Shaar HaKollel. And you should see the commentaries on the Rambam* in the Piskei Dinim of the Tzemach Tzedek*.

It is more logical to think that the Alter Rebbe*, in this passage of Iggeres HaKodesh*, does not specify whether prayer is a mitzvah* from the Torah* or not. He therefore does not say that those who define it as a Rabbinic enactment "are mistaken." He states: "They have never seen the luminaries of their life!"

In fact, the purpose of this letter is to emphasize the error of those who pray quickly, basing themselves on the fact that this prayer is of Rabbinic origin. He responds to them and underscores the gravity of their error, for this prayer that they recite rapidly and of which they make light is, in fact, the foundation of the entire Torah*.

במש"כ ע"ד אגה"ק של אדה"ז דתפלה דאורייתא וכו' (ראה העתקתה בס' משנת יואל - לר"י דיסקין - ומה שהעיר שם).

והנה לכאורה קשה ממש"כ בשולחנו (חאו"ח סק"ו סוס"ב) "וכן עיקר". ויש לתרץ עפמש"כ בשער הכולל בתחלתו. אבל ראה פס,ד להצ"צ חי' על הרמב"ם הל' תפלה. - ומחוורתא דאין כוונת אדה"ז באגה"ק הנ"ל לחוו"ד בכלל אם תפלה מה"ת (ולכן לא כתב שהאומרים שהיא מדרבנן "טועים", אלא ש"לא ראו מאורות מימיהם"), אלא תוכן האגרת להראות טעות אלו שרצו להתפלל בחפזון וכו' מפני שהתפלה דרבנן, וע"ז בא המענה וביאור גודל טעותם, כי בזמן הזה של המתפללים בחפזון והמלעיגים וכו' היא יסוד כל התורה וכו'. עיי"ש. ועיין היטב זח"ב רב, ב.
