To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

of extensive knowledge, Rav S. Y. (Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Yerushalayim; see letter no. 3834),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 3 Nissan, bearing good news. You tell me, indeed, that your grandson Yaakov, to whom Hashem* will grant long life, will reach the age of Bar Mitzvah* on the seventh day of Pesach*.

May Hashem* grant, in accordance with the teaching of the Mishnah*, that he advance from the age of thirteen — that of obligation in mitzvos* — to the age of fifteen — that of the study of Gemara*. His parents will lead him to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds.

Commenting on the verse "Educate the child according to his way," our Sages say: "From sixteen to twenty-four, the son is under the authority of his parents." And one may wonder at the ruling of the Alter Rebbe* (see letter no. 596), in his Laws of Torah Study, Chapter 1, end of paragraph 6, according to which, between these ages, "he finds himself between two places" (between autonomy and dependence).

You will derive from him and from all your children much true satisfaction, Chassidic* satisfaction, for long days and good years.

And you will celebrate the festival of Matzos*, which is approaching, in a kosher* and joyous manner.

מאשר אני קבלת מכתבו מג' ניסן מבשר טוב אשר נכדו יעקב שליט"א יגיע לגיל עול מצות בשביעי של פסח הבע"ל, ויהי רצון מהשי"ת אשר כדבר משנה הנה מבן י"ג למצות יגיע לבן ט"ו לגמרא כו' ויגדלוהו הוריו שיחיו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים, וכידוע פירוש רז"ל עה"כ חנוך לנער ע"פ דרכו, משיתסר וכו' ועד עשרים וארבעה יד ההורים על בנם (וצע"ק בפסק רבנו הזקן בהלכות ת"ת שלו פרק א' סוף סעיף וא"ו, דלכאורה ארכבי אתרי רכשי מבן ט"ז עד כ"ד), וכת"ר ירווה ממנו ומכל יו"ח שיחיו רוב נחת אמיתי הוא נחת חסידותי לאורך ימים ושנים טובות.

ויחוגו את חג המצות הבע"ל בכשרות ובשמחה.
