I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me about the dispute among the shochtim*. I am surprised that they do not realize the depth of the darkness of exile, which prevents one from seeing the obvious — in this case, the fact that this discord is the consequence of the actions of the one (among the shochtim*) who engaged in unfair competition in a frightening manner.

Not only does he not regret his bad conduct, but moreover, he continues his wrongdoing and has caused a rumor regarding the shechitah*. He claims that a single shochet* is sufficient, whereas for many years it has been customary in various places to appoint two (see letter no. 3946). This is particularly the case for the slaughter of lambs.

He should not have intervened to aggravate the situation, but it seems that all means are good. The Mishnah* observes that one mitzvah* leads to another, and you should also consult its conclusion (that one transgression leads to another). He has therefore gone to perform shechitah* in someone else's domain.

May Hashem* grant that my words not be in vain, that they be followed by action, or at least that they set things in motion.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אודות הסכסוך של השובי"ם. ולפלא שאינם מכירים בהחשך כפול ומכופל של הגלות עד שאין רואים אפילו דברים הבולטים, והוא, שהפתח שיוכל לבוא לידי סכסוך זה - נפתח ע"י פב"פ... והשיג גבול רעהו באופן הכי מבהיל... לא לבד שלא חזר מהנהגתו מהרעה, אלא שכנראה עודנו מוסיף בהנהגתו זו וגם הכניס קולות באופן השחיטה, אומר שמספיק שוחט אחד, למרות שנהוג בכו"כ מקומות רבות בשנים שיהיו שני שובי"ם, ובפרט בהנוגע בשחיטת כבשים, אף שאינו צריך להתערב בזה כלל לקלקל המצב, אבל כנראה שהכל כדאי, וכמאמר המשנה דמצוה גוררת מצוה (וכסיום המשנה שם), והלך לשחוט בחדרו של אחר כו'... ויה"ר שלא יהיו דברי בטלים ויבואו לפועל או עכ"פ להזזה.
