Brooklyn, New York

To the attention of Professor Avraham Yitzchak (Prof. A. I. Katz) HaCohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your books, as well as the publications of the Jewish Culture Foundation, and I thank you. The shipment was somewhat delayed, as it seems the package opened during transit. My response has likewise been delayed, due to my many occupations.

Among your books, I had the pleasant surprise of seeing the one entitled "Einstein's Theory of Relativity." For I did not know that you were a specialist in mathematics and physics. I was pleased to observe, on the title page, that you have not changed your name, Katz, which signifies Kohen Tzedek (a righteous Kohen).

As is my custom in such cases, I enclose several footnotes — those that came to mind as I leafed through your books, although I did so quickly, given the time at my disposal.

By the time you receive this letter, you will surely have obtained news of your sister, who, together with her son, must have safely returned to the Holy Land.

The festival of Pesach* is approaching, and on this occasion, I hereby express the wish that you celebrate it, together with the members of your family, in a kosher* and joyous manner.

With my blessing on the occasion of the festival and with greetings to your brothers,

M. Schneerson,

All those who comment on the theory of relativity emphasize, of course, among their conclusions, those that are most surprising and most fundamental — namely, the absence of absolute space and absolute time.

Indeed, space and time are relative, and it appears that this assertion is demonstrated irrefutably by the Michelson experiment (showing that the speed of light traveling east to west on earth is the same as that traveling north to south), or during a solar eclipse (when the light rays of a star pass before the sun), by the calculation of the path of a star (advancing slowly toward the center of the ellipse of the star of the solar system).

Such conclusions then become the heritage of science, just like Newton's three well-known laws, which are adopted even before one has been able to verify their lack of precision. To my great surprise, among all the books I have seen so far that deal with this subject, I have not found a single one that is measured in its claims. And even more so, among the readers of these works, no one questions this conclusion.

Now, in my opinion, even expressing reservations on this point is not yet sufficient.

Science, as it has recently been understood, is exact. Thus, one who arrives at certain conclusions through measuring and weighing cannot, on the basis of his scientific knowledge, nor even of his research, state exact concepts. For the instruments of exact science can neither apprehend a certain fact nor refute it, since it is not possible to demonstrate what is.

Moreover, it is customary, when a scientist completes an experiment and then writes conclusions and laws, for him to construct a new hypothesis in that discipline or to modify the existing one. Such reflections are merely suppositions, whose purpose is to integrate the new conclusions into the acquired knowledge of that science and to explain it in a simpler, more obvious manner that appeals to basic logic, to the fullest extent possible.

In this case, this theory is indeed a supposition, a possible explanation of natural phenomena. There is therefore no reason, in formalizing it, to introduce exact elements into it. Moreover, this even runs counter to the stated objective, at least regarding the matter under discussion, since the demonstration loses clarity — if, indeed, anyone can simply understand and mentally represent the fact that time and space are not absolute, that the speed of light is the same in all directions and for all observers, that space curves in accordance with the matter introduced into it, that the space and atmosphere of the world are limited like a bulb, that they expand or contract, that the speed C (that of light, which is three hundred thousand kilometers per second) possesses a particular property, since it is absolutely impossible to accelerate it.

* * *

All the scientific experiments that have been conducted, including in the domain of relativity, are based and supported by measurements, measuring instruments, and people who carry out these measurements and draw conclusions from them.

Consequently, these conclusions pertain solely to the measurement of place, matter, or light; to the functioning of the measuring instruments; and to the capacities and possibilities of man.

Regarding the experiments of Fizeau (according to which the speed of water flowing with the current is the same as that of water flowing against the current) and Michelson, the supposed explanation and the hypothesis closest to the experiment — requiring the fewest undemonstrable elements external to the experiment — one must have recourse to the explanation of Lorentz (according to which every body contracts during its movement, under the pressure of the place in which it finds itself).

And the well-known question, which you reproduce in your book — why does Lorentz's conclusion apply to all elements that change speed, a question that pertains to measurement carried out by man — is less thorny than this other question: why has the speed C received the property of being immutable? This analysis will not be elaborated upon here.

Regarding your book on the Jewish sources in the Quran:

Page XX: The researchers question the choice of Gabriel.

This can be explained simply on the basis of Daniel 8–9, according to which Gabriel is the one who comments on the vision, makes known what will occur at the end, and transmits knowledge.

You should also consult Daniel 12:6 and the following verses. Indeed, our Sages say that "the man clothed in linen — that is Gabriel."

On this subject, you should consult Midrash* Shemos Rabbah, Chapter 18, paragraph 5, according to which Gabriel is also charged with protecting Yisrael*, as he did for Avraham, according to the account reported in the Otzar HaMidrashim.

Pages XXII and XXIII: The comparison between the month of fasts and the month of Elul* is not satisfactory. Indeed, Elul*, from this perspective, must be linked to the Ten Days of Teshuvah*, making a total period of forty days.

The origin of this can be found in Devarim 22:13 and in the explanation of our Sages in Tractate Yevamos 48b: "One month: this is the teshuvah* for idolatry."

Page 147: The comparison with the prohibition of marrying those who belong to the Nesinei* people is not satisfactory, for they are converts and this prohibition is not linked to idolatry. One can therefore wonder why you advance an interpretation so difficult to accept.

All of this is specified in Devarim 7 and in Tractate Kiddushin 68b. You should also consult Malachi 2:11–12.
