I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you report several details of your life. You conclude by complaining that it is difficult for you to earn a livelihood, and you express surprise at this.

Now, the reason is stated in your letter, since in recent years you have earned your livelihood while violating the observance of Shabbos*. Now, our holy books emphasize that forbidden work on that day does not strengthen one's material sustenance — on the contrary, it undermines it.

Nevertheless, the Almighty declares that teshuvah* is effective and can repair the past. You will therefore decide, with the utmost firmness, to observe the mitzvos* of our Torah*, the Torah* of life. And you will endeavor to find a place to earn your livelihood and, more generally, to establish yourself in a manner that is permitted and kosher*, according to the Shulchan Aruch*. In this way, there is good hope that, little by little, you will find a position. Perhaps at the beginning you will face difficulties, but it is said: "You will begin in hardship, and in the end, you will prosper greatly."

You should have your tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of the place where you reside, to ensure that they are kosher* in accordance with Halachah*. Every day, before the morning prayer, you should give one franc to tzedakah*. Then, after the prayer, every day, including Shabbos* and festivals, you should recite at least one chapter of Tehillim*.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב איזה פרטים מדברי ימי חייו, ומסיים בהתאוננות על אשר קשה לו להסתדר בענין של פרנסה ותמה על זה. אף שהסיבה מובנת גם [ב]מכתבו, כיון שבשנים שעברו קבע ענין פרנסתו באופן היפך שמירת שבת קדש, וכבר מבואר בספרים הקדושים שעל ידי זה (עבודה אסורה בשבת קדש) לא רק שאין מוסיפין בפרנסה אלא אדרבה מזיקים את הפרנסה.

אבל כיון שהשם יתברך ויתעלה אמר שתשובה מועלת ויכולה לתקן גם את העבר, הנה יחליט בעצמו בתוקף הכי גדול לקיים מצות תורתנו תורת חיים, ולהשתדל למצוא מקום לפרנסה ולהסתדר בכלל באופן המותר וכשר על פי שולחן ערוך, ואז יש תקוה רבה וגדולה שבמשך הזמן יסתדר אף שבתחלתו יהי' אפשר קישוים בדבר, וכבר נאמר והי' ראשיתך מצער ואחריתך ישגא מאד.

ויראה לבדוק את התפילין שלו וכן את המזוזות במקום שהוא דר, שיהיו כשרות כדין, ובכל ים חול קודם תפלת הבקר יתן איזה פראנק לצדקה, ולאחר התפלה בבקר בכל יום וגם בש"ק ויום טוב, יאמר על כל פנים מזמור אחד מספר תהלים.
