I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your letter of 5 Shevat and I am surprised not to have heard from you since then. You ask me about the education you should give your children. Will it be better among the children of the Sephardic communities, to which you are close, or should you opt for a more Orthodox school, even though the children there are essentially of Ashkenazic origin?
There surely exist, at the present time, fully Orthodox schools that belong to the Sephardic communities. Nevertheless, if there are none near you, close to your home, it is quite obvious that the fear of Hashem* remains the determining factor. Moreover, by speaking to the teacher of the class, you can surely arrange that your children do not have a feeling of loneliness.
You mention the possibility of pursuing studies to become a sofer*. The answer to this question depends on your aptitude in this domain, which can be evaluated only through practice — that is, by approaching an expert in the field, who will test you in the appropriate manner. You will make a decision based on the results.
You tell me that, due to your difficulties in earning a livelihood, you are paying off your debts over a longer period than was originally planned.
This must not discourage you, Heaven forbid. It is certain that the one who lent you this money does not hold it against you. On the contrary, he is satisfied to see that you are repaying the debt in a way that is manageable for you. It is said, indeed: "You shall not be a creditor toward him."
For who has knowledge of what is hidden before Hashem*? Ultimately, Hashem* does indeed enable a Jew to pay his debt, since it is a mitzvah* to do so. Admittedly, one can ask why this possibility is delayed. But, once again, we have no knowledge of what is hidden, and material sustenance depends not on merit, but on mazal*.
No doubt you will use the days of Pesach* with the students in the appropriate manner. You will therefore make all the necessary preparations so that these approaching days of Pesach*, those preceding them, and those following them, proceed in the best way. May Hashem* grant that you meet with success.
I am surprised that you do not mention the situation of your mother and what has become of the other members of your family. No doubt you will inform me at the next opportunity.
With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*,
