6 Nissan 5716

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yissachar Dov (Rav I. D. Gurevitch, director of the Beis Rivkah* of Yerres, in the Paris region; see letter no. 3910),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Nissan, which followed another lengthy interruption. You tell me that you face several difficulties in your mission of educating Jewish girls in sacred values. This is, indeed, the way a person carries out the task entrusted to him, ever since we were exiled from our land and distanced from our soil.

Moreover, it is precisely in these recent years that the darkness and the veil have diminished, even though they still exist. In fact, the Chassidim* who come from the country in which we previously lived (Soviet Russia) observe this themselves, concretely, with their own eyes of flesh.

Therefore, hold at least for a brief moment the following kal v'chomer*: "In the situation that was mine some twenty years ago, I observed the Torah* and mitzvos* even though it entailed genuine danger. Moreover, it was precisely through this that I was saved, together with all the members of my family. How much more must I give thanks to the Creator of the world, Who directs it, Who brought me out of constriction and led me to expansiveness. I must therefore accomplish all of this joyfully." It is surely unnecessary to say more.

Sometimes obstacles and veils arise, but you must have noticed that with a slight effort and especially with firm determination to move things forward, one meets with success. This will surely be the case in the future as well. Our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, always carries out his mission. He invokes Divine mercy so that those who put his teachings and his will into practice should meet with success in everything they accomplish, including in their personal concerns.

You mention the publication of notebooks for students. I am surprised that you do not yet have them, since they exist in all schools. Obviously, it is good to produce them now.

You ask me what attitude to adopt toward the students and how to balance the two approaches — inspiring awe on one hand, and showing kindness on the other — which is indispensable toward children and women, especially in matters of education.

It is true that this must be so, and these two approaches are jointly possible. The boundaries between them become apparent during the educational process, depending on the personality of the student. One therefore cannot establish immutable rules in this matter. It also depends on the place, the time, and the students. It would be good for the teachers to consult with one another from time to time — all together, or at least the majority of them — examining the students' behavior and the way to influence them. May Hashem* grant you success.

No doubt you are preparing the Pesach* Seder* sufficiently in advance. One should verify the customs the students had at home, in Morocco. On essential points, their Seder* must conform to Chabad* customs. However, certain points can no doubt be carried out in accordance with their own custom, in the appropriate manner.

The request for blessing that appeared in your letter will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. His health has no doubt improved.

Pesach* is approaching, for us and for all of Yisrael*, for good and for blessing. You will celebrate it, together with the members of your family, in a kosher* and joyous manner.

With my blessing and greetings to the directors and students, for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*, materially and spiritually,
