I greet you and bless you,

I received with pleasure your letter, in which you describe how the wedding took place, at a good and fruitful moment, and you briefly explain how you are living now. I would like to know more precisely how you are preparing for the festival of Pesach*, which is approaching. You will surely let me know.

You also mention your conduct. I am not at all pleased that you fast half a day every Monday and Thursday. This is not the path of Chassidus*. Instead of mortifying the body, one must cause the animal soul* to suffer. This means that one must not compromise one's physical integrity by abstaining from food and drink, when nourishment is indispensable to health.

Instead, one must impose suffering upon the animal soul* — that is, one must not seek pleasure when eating and drinking, avoid unnecessary words, and all the more so those that border on lashon hara* or are even forbidden. One must also put into practice the commandment: "Love your fellow as yourself," including toward one who gives the impression of not returning that love, or who has even caused harm or shown disrespect.

All these modes of conduct are sometimes much more difficult to put into practice than fasting, which merely eliminates food and drink. Moreover, they do not weaken one's health and therefore allow one to study Torah* and fulfill the mitzvos* in the best manner, without being troubled by physical concerns.

I extend my blessing that you convey good tidings of all this. You will also share good news about the efforts your wife is making to strengthen Yiddishkeit*, for yourselves and for your surroundings. And you will have a kosher* and joyous Pesach*.

With my blessing on the occasion of the festival,
