I bless you and greet you,

I was pleased to receive your letter of 3/9, which followed an interruption. You discuss the financial means of your fund, intended to award a scholarship each year to a deserving student (see letter no. 4081).

It is clear that one can always make such an award. But it is equally clear that this is not merely a scholarship, but rather the covering of needs. It is therefore not possible to fix an amount in advance. Everything depends on the person making the donation and the means she devotes to it, on the annual budget, and on the number of beneficiaries.

If you choose one of the formulas that have just been defined, I think it could be allocated to the Chabad* school network in our Holy Land or in Morocco.

I did not write all of this to you previously, because the awarding of prizes is not very common among Jews. We have nothing against such a procedure, but we do not practice it. One of the essential reasons for this is no doubt the need to imbue Yeshivah* studies with holiness. Such a procedure was therefore not introduced, so as not to suggest to the students a financial or, more generally, material motivation.

Nevertheless, in recent years, several Yeshivos*, particularly in the Holy Land, do indeed reward students. However, they generally do not do so with money, but rather with books.

You say nothing about your health problems, and I would like to believe that they were only temporary, that you now feel much better, and that you will be able to celebrate the festival of Pesach* in the proper manner.

I wish you to convey good tidings of all that has been said, particularly regarding your state of health.

מובן מאליו ,שניתן לסדר ענין כזה ,אבל מובן גם ,שאין זה ענין של

מילגה ,אלא קרן־עידוד ,וגם בזה אי אפשר לקבוע את סכום הכסף ,שזה

תלוי באדם המעוניין ליסד דבר כזה )גודל הסכום למטרה זו ,כמה

יחולק בכל שנה ולכמה האנשים( ,וכאשר היא תבחר באחת מאפשרויות

האמורות ,הנני משער שיוכלו להביא לפועל באחד ממוסדות הלימוד של

חב״ד בארצנו הקדושה או מרוקו.

לא כתבתי לה בענין זה ,כי אצל בני ישראל חלוקת פרסים מעין זו

איננה אירוע נפוץ ,ואף שאיננו נגד זה ,אבל גם לא מעודדים כאלה ,בטח

אחת הסיבות היא ,כיון שלקחו בחשבון שלימוד התורה בישיבות קשור

בקדושה ,לכן לא רצו לעשות את האמור לעיל ,כדי לא להדגיש שזה

נעשה -ע״י התלמידים -לצורך שימוש בכסף או שימוש גשמי אחר,

אבל דוקא בשנים האחרונות ישיבות רבות ובמיוחד בארץ ישראל,

התחילו להנהיג זאת )לא ע״י פרסים של כסף ,אלא הענקת ספרים

לעתים קרובות(.

אינה כותבת כל פרטים אודות הבריאות ,רצוני לקוות שהדבר הוא

נחלת העבר ,וכעת מרגישה יותר טוב ותוכל לחגוג את חג הפסח באופן

המתאים,

בברכה לבשורות טובות בכל האמור ובמיוחד אודות בריאות טובה.
