To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Shmuel Menachem Mendel (Rav S. M. M. Liberov, of London; see letter no. 2709),
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me that you have found a house that suits you. You have therefore submitted an application, as is done in such cases.
May Hashem* grant that this beginning take place at a good and fruitful moment and that the conclusion be equally positive, with a good that is visible and tangible, for you and for all the members of your family.
I am surprised that you say nothing about the spreading of the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) outward, about the activities of the Chassidim* of London in general, and about yours and those of your wife in particular. No doubt you will complete all of this at the next opportunity, with the appropriate detail.
I extend my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach* and to convey good tidings of all this, as well as regarding your mother-in-law, to whom Hashem* will grant long life.
I received your previous letter in its time. Obviously, it is necessary to explain to others the need to study Chassidus*. It is clear that if one says nothing, nothing will happen. Nevertheless, one must speak in a pleasant manner, according to the situation of each listener with respect to Torah* and mitzvos*.
Why is Chassidus* more clearly necessary at the present time? Several texts address this question, and the reason is clear to everyone. When there is a new illness in the world, Heaven forbid, or when an old one intensifies, the treatment must be intensified. Moreover, it must also be administered to healthy people, if it is a contagious illness. And our Sages say, regarding each person: "Do not trust in yourself."
In our time, one cannot be content with studying the Chassidus* of Poland, and what I have just said establishes this. Indeed, the treatment must be adapted to the illness. Now, the latter manifests itself primarily through intellectual reasoning. The treatment must therefore also address the intellect and convince it. You should understand what I mean.
