I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 8 Adar, in which you tell me how you earn your livelihood. You are the subject of an accusation in your city, and you therefore have the idea of abandoning the position you hold there.

I have already written to several Chassidim* — and you must have seen one of these letters — that the time has come to stop hiding the truth from ourselves. One cannot beg all those who have the merit of taking part in the institutions and achievements of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. For one of two things is the case: either they recognize that this is their own good, or they deny it and consider that they themselves are rendering a service to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* — through him, to all our holy masters — and, through them, to the Holy One, blessed be He, and the heavenly hosts. In the latter case, moralizing will serve no purpose, and one can understand how much one must pity such people. Certainly, there is a mitzvah* to rebuke, but there is a limit to everything, especially in our time, when every moment is precious for action.

Those who are still young in years, or who did not have the merit of receiving their education at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, must be cherished and indulged, in accordance with the explanation of the Rambam* in his commentary on the Mishnah*. And Chassidus* explains how one educates a child. By contrast, it is unnecessary to rebuke those who studied Torah* at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* and then established Jewish and Chassidic* families, or to indulge them. One tries to convince them, but it serves no purpose, for after a certain time, they maintain their opinion. And there is no longer any limit to the interventions and courtesies, whereas the time could be much better used. And the work is done between two complaints. That is the feeling and the appearance one gives.

At least once, the truth must be stated as it is, so that perhaps you will begin to observe the other person, telling yourself that he, too, possesses the ten powers of the soul, among which are three intellectual powers — Chochmah*, Binah*, and Daas*. Moreover, he has feelings in his heart; he can be moved. And emotion can surpass his understanding. Sometimes you yourself may be mistaken, while your friends are right. There is then no other means of determining this than to follow the rule that one follows the majority.

If you meditate on this, for all the time necessary for your own person, thinking about yourself and with sincerity, you will no doubt understand the words of the verse: "Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace." Thereupon, you will cooperate in this matter with all the other Chassidim*.

I repeat once more what I said previously: No one is holding you in the service of the Rebbe*, and the same applies to the others. Nevertheless, you inspire immense pity, for it seems you have been living in error for decades. You think you are rendering a service to our holy master, whereas the opposite is true. You can understand what follows from such a way of viewing your work. You, together with all the others, must therefore try to explain the truth to yourselves, once and then a second time. May Hashem* lead you to make the right choice.

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
