To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,

Rav Dovid Meir (Rav D. M. Shulman, see letter no. 4022),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of Shushan Purim*, in which you inform me of the fire that occurred.

You surely know what our Sages say, in Tractate Bava Basra 12b: "When good is granted to someone (as is the case after a fire), it is for long days." This is particularly true in such a case, as explained in the Derech Mitzvosecha*, page 114b, which cites the words of the Alter Rebbe*, as well as the notes and references printed at the end of that book.

May Hashem* grant that these blessings of our masters be fully realized in you.

Rav Meir (Rav M. Avtson of Detroit, see letter no. 4248),

I greet you and bless you,

I have just received the packages of books, and I thank you for them. No doubt you will maintain this positive practice in the future. You will encourage the other Chassidim* to do the same, and they will follow your example. Obviously, you will tell me all the expenses that result, and they will be reimbursed to you as quickly as possible, with my thanks.

You know the instruction given by our holy master, the Rebbe Rashab*, on this subject. It is indeed necessary to indicate the amount of these expenses (rather than bearing them oneself). In this way, no one will be able to raise an objection afterwards. This is what he himself answered to one of the Chassidim*, of great stature, belonging to the previous generation, who was attached to him with all his heart and soul. Obviously, that is what this man did, and he maintained the same attitude subsequently.

With my blessing,

I received, in their time, your letter and your request for a blessing* on the occasion of the Hilloula* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*, 10 Shevat). Since then, your teaching to the young men has surely expanded, as has the spreading of the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) in general. You made use of the days of Purim* for this, and you will do the same for Pesach*, which is approaching.

May Hashem* grant that you know success and convey good tidings.

ז"ע נתקבלו חבילות הספרים, ות"ח על טרחתו בזה, ובודאי יחזיק במנהג טוב זה וגם את שאר אנ"ש יעורר וממנו יראו וכן יעשו, ומובן שכל ההוצאות שבזה יודיע הסכום ויסולק בהקדם ובצירוף תודה, וכבר ידוע בכגון דא הוראת נשיאנו הק' כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) שצריך להודיע ע"ד הוצאות כמו אלו שזהו סגולה שלא יבוא מי שהוא ויבלבל בעתיד וענה כזה לאחד מהחסידים בדור שעבר בעל צורה ומקושר אליו בכל לבבו ובכל נפשו, ומובן שהנ"ל עשה כן והתנהג באופן כזה גם בעתיד.
